Stonehill Rallies to Earn Split with #24 Adelphi

Panthers post 6-2 win in game one, before Skyhawks rally for 4-2 win in game two

GARDEN CITY, N.Y. (April 18, 2010) – Stonehill College, ranked ninth in this week’s National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) Division II East Regional poll, earned a split with Adelphi University, ranked 24th in this week’s NCBWA Division II national poll, in a Northeast-10 Conference baseball doubleheader at William J. Bonomo Field this afternoon. Adelphi posted a 6-2 win in game one, while Stonehill rallied for a 4-2 win in game two.

Junior Scott Hackett (Bangor, Maine/Bangor) led Stonehill as he hit a combined 4-for-8 on the afternoon with a stolen base and two runs scored. Classmate Angelo Bruno (Norwalk, Conn./Norwalk) chipped in with two doubles, an RBI and run scored.

Senior Chris Weidlein (Merrick, N.Y./Calhoun) led Adelphi as he hit a combined 4-for-7 with an RBI. Classmate Justin Ciamillo (Sayville, N.Y./Sayville) batted 4-for-8 with three runs scored, an RBI and stolen base.

Justin Ciamillo and Chris Weidlein led Adelphi to a 6-0 lead and senior lefthander Mike Scudero (Massapequa Park, N.Y./Massapequa) made it stand on the mound as the Panthers posted a 6-2 win in game one.

Scudero earned the win (3-0), allowing two earned runs on seven hits with nine strikeouts and two walks over 7.2 innings for Adelphi. Freshman righthander Dillon McNamara (Staten Island, N.Y./Moore Catholic) closed the game out with 1.1 scoreless innings, working around a walk with one strikeout.

Ciamillo paced the Adelphi offense, hitting 4-for-5 with an RBI and three runs scored. Weidlein was 3-for-4, while senior Anthony Anzalone (Rocky Point, N.Y./Rocky Point) batted 1-for-4 with an RBI and run scored.

Scott Hackett hit 2-for-4 with a stolen base for Stonehill. Senior Mitch Davis (Bow, N.H./Bow) batted 1-for-4 with an RBI and run scored, while sophomore Rich McHugh (Pembroke, Mass./Thayer Academy) finished 1-for-4 with an RBI.

Sophomore righthander Bryan Galligan (Brockton, Mass./Brockton) took the loss (2-1) on the mound for Stonehill, yielding six earned runs on nine hits with three strikeouts and four walks over 5.2 innings. Junior righthander Dan Corrigan (Portsmouth, R.I./Portsmouth) allowed just a hit over 2.1 shutout innings of relief with three strikeouts and a walk.

Adelphi opened the scoring with two runs in the bottom of the first. Sophomore Justin Farnum (Glendale, N.Y./Monsignor McClancy) drew a bases loaded walk, while sophomore T.J. Humrich (Franklin Square, N.Y./Carey) drove in a run while reaching on a fielder’s choice. The Panthers added single runs in the third as Ciamillo led off with a single and scored on a single from junior Trevor Thorstensen (Holbrook, N.Y./Sachem East).

Adelphi scored a run in the fifth when Ciamillo led off with a single to center and later scored on a wild pitch. The Panthers added two more in the sixth on RBI singles from Anzalone and Ciamillo.

Stonehill got on the board with a pair in the eighth when Davis and McHugh notched RBI singles.

Stonehill erased an early 2-0 deficit in posting a 4-2 victory over Adelphi to earn a valuable split in the NE-10 doubleheader in game two. The Skyhawks scored their four runs on just three hits, taking advantage of nine walks by Adelphi pitching and two Panther errors.

Scott Hackett hit 2-for-4 with two runs scored for Stonehill, while Angelo Bruno finished 1-for-3 with a double, run scored and RBI.

Junior Shane Penzone (Hudson, Mass./Hudson Catholic) earned the win (2-1) for Stonehill, allowing two runs, just one earned, on five hits with a strikeout and two walks over six innings. Sophomore Michael Von Stein (Trumbull, Conn./Trumbull) picked up his second save of the season with three shutout innings of relief, allowing just a hit and a walk with one strikeout.

Chris Weidlein hit 1-for-3 with an RBI for Adelphi, while Anthony Anzalone finished 2-for-5. Junior Richard McCarren (Seaford, N.Y./Seaford) batted 1-for-2 with a pair of walks, a double and run scored.

Freshman righthander Jimmy Milani (Centereach, N.Y./Centereach) took the loss (0-2) in relief for Adelphi, allowing two earned runs on no hits and three walks in two thirds of an inning. Sophomore lefthander Chris Pabisch (Dix Hills, N.Y./Half Hollow Hills) started for the Panthers and allowed two earned runs on two hits and six walks with five strikeouts in 5.2 innings.

Adelphi staked out a 2-0 lead with single runs in the first and second innings. McCarren led off with a double and scored on a groundout by Weidlein in the first. Junior Matt Barle (Massapequa, N.Y./Massapequa) reached on an error in the second and later scored on a sacrifice fly by Trevor Thorstensen.

Stonehill evened the score in the sixth when senior Ryan Healey (Lynn, Mass./Lynn English) drew a bases-loaded walk and then senior Shane Franz (Cazenovia, N.Y./Cazenovia) drove in the tying run with a sacrifice fly. The Skyhawks took the lead with another pair in the seventh as Bruno posted an RBI double and senior Rob Von Stein (Trumbull, Conn./Trumbull) collected a sacrifice fly.

Stonehill (16-14, 11-7 NE-10) is back in action on Tuesday when it hosts Franklin Pierce University at Lou Gorman Field at 3:30 p.m. Adelphi (26-10, 12-6 NE-10) hosts 23rd-ranked Southern Connecticut State University on Tuesday for a key NE-10 matchup at 3:30 p.m.
