King Breaks School Record in Back-to-Back Meets at URI Coaches Invitational

KINGSTON, R.I. (February 10, 2024) – Senior Solomon King (Norwood, Mass.) broke a 16-year-old school record in the indoor 60m dash Saturday as the Stonehill College men's track and field team competed at the University of Rhode Island Coaches Invitational at Mackal Field House.

FIELD EVENTS

  • Freshman Christopher Gill (Malden, Mass.) set the Stonehill freshman record in the shot put while also having the third-best throw in school history. His mark of 14.65m (47' 9.25") puts him into the top five of all throwers in the NEC.
  • Not only did King win the 60m, but he also placed second in the high jump while hitting the best mark in the conference at 2.00m (6' 6.75").
  • Freshman Drew Pierson (Ellsworth, Maine) came in a tie for eighth place in the high jump, reaching 1.90m (6' 2.75").
  • Junior Jacob Pacheco (Merrimack, N.H.) tied for fourth place in the pole vault, reaching a mark of 4.40m (14' 5.25").

TRACK EVENTS

  • King Ran the 60m dash in 6.80 seconds, the fastest time in the conference, surpassing an indoor school record that was set on March 9, 2007, by Torrey Price at the NCAA Championships at the Reggie Lewis Center in Boston, Mass.
  • Freshman Brody McGrail (Duxbury, Mass.) also had a great showing in the 60m dash, running the race in 7.01 seconds, the fastest time for a freshman and fifth-fastest time in Stonehill indoor history.
  • Junior Shea Drugan (Westfield, Mass.) joined King and McGrail in the 60m dash, placing fifth in the prelims and seventh in the finals with a time of 7.09 seconds.
  • In the 200m dash, freshman Jon Dougherty (Reading, Mass.) finished the race in 23.06 seconds to place fourth while senior Andrew Morin (Beverly, Mass.) and sophomore Patrick Morin (Barnstable, Mass.) placed fifth in sixth at 23.23 and 23.32 seconds.
  • Drugan also placed second in the 400m dash, clocking in at 51.28 seconds for a new personal best while teammate junior Louis Warner (Kinderhook, N.Y.) came in third place in 51.31 seconds, also setting a personal best in the event.
  • Freshman Will Tinkham (Stoughton, Mass.) ran in the 60m hurdle prelims, qualifying for the finals with a time of 8.52 seconds before finishing in fifth in the final race with a time of 8.62 seconds.
  • Freshman Nicholas Davies (Auckland, New Zealand) placed third in the 1-mile race on Saturday, crossing the finish line in 4:20.53.
  • Freshman Brendan Wilder (Waltham, Mass) finished the 1000m run in 2:31.68, finishing in fifth place while setting a new personal best.
  • The Skyhawks top finisher in the 3000m race was Aidan Byrne (Danbury, Conn.), notching a new personal best time of 8:48.34 to place seventh.
  • As a team, Stonehill moved into third place in the 4x800m relay with the squad of Davies, Wilder, freshman Matthew Malora (Harrington Park, N.J.), and freshman Colin Keane (Blackwood, N.J.) combining for a time of 8:13.59.

  • Stonehill track and field is back in action next Sunday and Monday at the Ocean Breeze Sports Complex in Staten Island, N.Y. for the Northeast Conference Championships.
