King Claims Two First-Place Finishes as Men’s Track and Field Begins Season at Alden Invitational

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (December 2, 2023) – Senior Solomon King (Norwood, Mass.) won the 60m dash and the 300m race as the Stonehill College men's track and field team opened the 2023-24 indoor season at the Olney-Margolies Athletic Center as the team competed in the Alden Invitational hosted by Brown University.

As a team, the Skyhawks notched 68 points to come in fourth place overall. Brown came in first place with 160 points in its home meet.

FIELD EVENTS

  • Junior Parker Hagen (Newport, R.I.) placed fifth in the triple jump, reaching a distance of 13.37m while sophomore Levi Wurster came in sixth with a mark of 12.97m which is a new personal best for the sophomore.
  • Senior Chris Cox (Warwick, R.I.) had the best finish of the Stonehill throwers as he set a new personal best, finishing 11th in the shot put with his toss going 12.85m.
  • Sophomore Jonathan Scampoli (Wappingers Falls, N.Y.) came in 12th in the shot put, reaching a distance of 12.54m with his throw.
  • Freshman Joseph Chesney (Cumberland, R.I.) made his Skyhawk debut competing in the weight throw as he placed 12th as his throw went 11.91m.

RUNNING EVENTS

  • Competing in the one-mile run was freshman Brendan Wilder (Waltham, Mass.) who placed third with a time of 4:25.85 in his collegiate debut on the track.
  • Freshman Will Tinkham (Stoughton, Mass.) also made his Stonehill debut, starting strong with a fourth-place finish in the 60m hurdles as he crossed the finish line in 8.64 seconds.
  • King was the lone Skyhawk to win their event on Saturday, taking the top spot in the 60m dash with a time of 6.81 seconds to set a new personal best.
  • King also set a new personal best in the 300m race, coming in first place with a time of 34.36 seconds.
  • Junior Louis Warner (Kinderhook, N.Y.) finished eighth in the 1000m race, clocking in at 2:38.92 for a new personal best in the event.
  • After finishing third in the NEC at the cross country championships, the men had six different distance runners place in the top 10 of the 3000m race Saturday afternoon.
  • Fifth-year Reilly Johnston (Providence, R.I.) led the pack for Stonehill, coming in third with a time of 8:44.58.
  • Freshman Brayton Gazerro (Coventry, R.I.) placed fourth in his Skyhawk debut for the track team, crossing the finish line in 8:50.03.
  • Junior Jace Hollenbach (Topsham, Maine), senior Patrick Garratt (Westwood, Mass.), freshman Dylan Brilliant (Plymouth, Mass.), and senior Aidan Byrne (Danbury, Conn.) finished in the next four spots with 15 seconds separating the group of six runners.

  • Stonehill track and field is back in action next month for a meet hosted by the University of Massachusetts at the TRACK at New Balance in Boston on Sunday, January 14.
