The Details

  • The Huskies struck first in the opening period when Hullaby generated his own offense and sent the puck past Day for an early 1-0 USM lead.
  • Despite the lead, Stonehill had their fair share of looks for the rest of the period as the squad rattled off nine shots led by Cohen with two but Penton stopped each Stonehill attempt as Southern Maine headed into the second with a one-goal lead.
  • Both sides played a hard-fought second period as Stonehill held the shot advantage, 10-8. However, Southern Maine doubled their lead when Marini found an open Judd as the Huskies made it 2-0 after two.
  • Stonehill wasted no time early in the third (17:26) as there was a scrum of both Skyhawks and Huskies in front of Pento and Pineo was able to poke in the free puck which cut the Southern Maine deficit to one (2-1).
  • Less than 10 minutes later (11:00), after Rapalje sent a wrister on the Huskies net, Cohen was in the right place as he corralled the loose puck and put it past Penton which evened the contest at two.
  • With under 50 seconds in regulation (48 seconds), Ireland had a great look but saw his shot turned away by Penton as the squads headed into overtime.
  • In overtime, the Skyhawks had their best chance when Rapalje rifled a one-timer but was blocked by a sliding Husky defender with 27 seconds left in the game.
  • Southern Maine also had their share of looks for the game-winner but Day stopped any Huskies shot and secured the 2-2 tie.
  • Day's 30 saves marked the fourth time in his last five starts with 25 or more saves.
