Ireland's Two Goal Performance Lifts Stonehill Over Fitchburg State, 3-2

FITCHBURG, MASS. (October 19, 20220- Despite being down 2-0 after the first, the Stonehill College men's ice hockey battled back for a 3-2 victory Wednesday evening at the Wallace Civic Center.

The Details

  • Fitchburg State started off the scoring early with two quick goals off the sticks of Wilmshurst and Kramer. Despite the two-goal lead, the Skyhawks battled back in the second period and evened the game at two. 
  • The Skyhawks grabbed their first goal after generating a powerplay opportunity and from there, Ireland netted Stonehill's first goal. Later in the period, the Purple and White capitalized on yet another powerplay opportunity after Schwenninger found the back of the net.
  • As the third got underway, Fitchburg State had a chance to go ahead with a powerplay opportunity but FitzPatrick made clutch stops and kept the Skyhawks within striking distance. With just a little under 10 minutes left to go in the contest, Richard Hall corralled a loose puck and sent a pass up to Schwenninger. From there, Schwenninger one-timed a pass to Rapalje then he and Ireland skated two on one where Ireland beat the Falcons goalie for the 3-2 advantage. 
  • Fitchburg State pushed hard at the end of the period when they pulled their goalie for the extra man advantage but FitzPatrick and the Stonehill defense held strong and completed the comeback with a 3-2 win.
