Volleyball Forces Game Five Against LIU Post, But Falls 2-3

Manuszak breaks career digs program record

EASTON, Mass. (October 3, 2017) – The Stonehill College women's volleyball fought back to force a game five against LIU Post, but the Skyhawks fell 3-2 Saturday afternoon in Merkert Gymnasium. The Skyhawks lost with set scores of 25-22, 17-25, 19-25, 25-23, 16-18.

Stonehill (9-12) junior Allyson Hughes (Modesto, California/Big Valley Christian) matched her career high in kills with 21, setting a match high. Katherine DeLanty (Smithtown, New York/Smithtown West) notched her third double-double of the season with 15 kills and 17 digs, while so also chipped in four blocks. Senior libero Claire Manuszak (Indianapolis, Indiana/Bishop Chatard) notched 12 digs, breaking the all-time digs record of 1,451, where Sydney Maxey '13 set it back in 2012. Freshman setter Jessica Givens (Albuquerque, New Mexico/St. Pius X) tallied 54 assists in the match, setting a new career high.

LIU Post (23-4) saw Rachel Londot and Danielle Valenza record double-digit kills with 13 and 17, respectively. Both also tallied double-doubles with 23 and 10 digs, respectively. Indira Rojas notched 21 digs, while Asiya Way registered a match-high seven blocks and the team totaled 19 service aces.

The Pioneers came out in the first set with the lead, 18-17, until the Skyhawks tallied two points, 19-18, for their first lead of the set. LIU Post came up on top two more times during a Stonehill 6-4 run, but the Skyhawks took the first frame 25-22 with its .405 hitting percentage.

LIU Post once again opened up the second set with the lead and a 10-point advantage 15-5. Stonehill was only able to come within six, 10-16, before the Pioneers drove the frame home with a 10-7 run, 25-17, tying the match at one a piece.

Six-straight points was the start of the third set, 6-0, in favor of LIU Post, as Stonehill cut the deficit to two, 4-6. As the score toggled back and forth in the remaining points, neither team was able to score no more than two points in a serve, as the Pioneers took the lead, 2-1, with a 25-19 third set.

For the fourth-straight set, Stonehill was down in the beginning, but soon fought back with six-straight points to take a three-point lead, 16-13. LIU Post tied up the frame twice, 16-16 and 23-23, but Stonehill would tie up the match with two points from Megan Pennino (Wantagh, New York/Wantagh) and Hughes to win 25-23.

The Pioneers scored seven straight in game five, but the Skyhawks finally broke that streak, 1-7, with a LIU Post error. Stonehill rallied with its own seven-point attack, 10-9, and the lead in the final frame. LIU Post tied up the set five times before scoring three-straight points as Valenza served taking match point, 18-16.  

Stonehill travels to New York to face Northeast-10 Conference foe, the College of Saint Rose on Friday, November 3 at 6:00 p.m.
