Volleyball Fights Past Southern N.H., 3-1

Skyhawks totaled four career- and three-match highs

MANCHESTER, N.H. (October 10, 2017) – The Stonehill College women's volleyball team defeated Southern New Hampshire University, 3-1, Tuesday night at SNHU Fieldhouse. The Skyhawks won the match with set scores of 25-22, 17-25, 25-16, and 25-17.  

Stonehill's (6-10, 3-3 NE10) freshman Sophia Poveda (Miami, Florida/Westminster Christian School) recorded her first-career double-double tallying a career-high 11 kills, 12 digs, and three aces. Katherine DeLanty (Smithtown, New York/Smithtown West) notched a match-high 17 kills, while Allyson Hughes (Modesto, California/Big Valley Christian) was the third Skyhawk to record double-digits with 12 kills. Jessica Givens (Albuquerque, New Mexico/St. Pius X) chipped in a match-high 43 assists, while Claire Manuszak (Indianapolis, Indiana/Bishop Chatard) registered a career-high 31 digs.

Southern New Hampshire's (6-10, 2-5 NE10) Marisa Coronis totaled a match-high 17 kills and 10 digs. Three other Penmen notched double-digit digs including Jessica Dillon, Kathleen Schurman, and Shaira Sanabria.

The Skyhawks slipped up in the beginning of the first set, as the Penmen had a 9-4 lead, but Stonehill was able to fight back with a 10-5 lead tying up the frame, 14-14. Southern N.H. was unable to hold on as Stonehill ran with an 11-8 rally to take the first set, 25-22.

The Penmen started off the second set with a seven-point lead, 10-3, and just edged out the Skyhawks with their .132 hitting percentage compared to Stonehill's .075 hitting clip, to take the frame, 17-25.

Stonehill held the lead throughout the third set, as Southern N.H. was only able to come within two, 10-12. The Skyhawks' largest lead of the set came at the last point, after Stonehill took three-straight points, 25-16.

In the fourth set, the Penmen was able to capitalize on some Skyhawk errors before Stonehill tied up the set at 16, and saw Poveda serve nine times for an eight-point lead, 24-16. Southern N.H. squeezed in one final point, before Stonehill took match point with a kill by DeLanty, 25-17.

Stonehill hosts Saint Anselm College on Saturday, October 14 at 1:00 p.m. in Merkert Gymnasium. Before and in between the second and third sets, the Skyhawks will be collecting money for The Side-Out Foundation and its Dig Pink initiative.
