New Haven Blanks Volleyball in Three-Straight Sets, 3-0

Hughes notches a team-high nine kills

WEST HAVEN, Conn. (October 21, 2017) – The Stonehill College volleyball team fell to the University of New Haven in three-straight sets, 3-0, with set scores of 19-25, 14-25, 12-25 Saturday afternoon at Charger Gymnasium.

For Stonehill (7-11, 4-4 NE10) Allyson Hughes (Modesto, California/Big Valley Christian) recorded a team-high nine kills, two digs and one block, while Claire Manuszak (Indianapolis, Indiana/Bishop Chatard) registered 15 digs. Jessica Givens (Albuquerque, New Mexico/St. Pius X) tallied two aces, as Megan Pennino (Wantagh, New York/Wantagh) totaled two blocks.

New Haven (15-7, 10-0 NE10) saw Caroline Martins record a match-high 13 kills and eight digs, while Kali Greathead notched eight kills. Lindsey Kim chipped in 11 digs and Lexis Peterson registered three blocks.

Stonehill was within two for most of the beginning of the first set, 5-7, until the Skyhawks tied up the frame twice, 8-8. The Chargers responded with four-straight points to extend its lead to four, 12-8, but it was short lived as Stonehill fought back for a one-point deficit, 14-15. In the Chargers 10-5 run, they closed the set with three-straight points taking the first frame, 25-19.

The second set was dominated by New Haven's .355 hitting percentage, their highest of the match. The Skyhawks were able to tie the frame at nine, 9-9, but the Chargers ran with a 16-5 rally to take the second set, 14-25.

New Haven once again led the way in the final frame, taking an early six-point lead, 11-5. Stonehill came within four points, 7-11, but the Chargers wrapped up the match with a 14-5 run and a .312 hitting percentage, for a 25-12 third set to secure their 11th-straight victory.

Stonehill travels to western Massachusetts for a Northeast-10 Conference matchup against Assumption College on Tuesday, October 24 with a start time of 6:00 p.m. at Laska Gymnasium. During the month of October, the Skyhawks will be collecting money for The Side-Out Foundation and its Dig Pink initiative.
