Franklin Pierce Gets Past Women’s Volleyball, 3-0

Givens records second-career double-double 

EASTON, Mass. (September 30, 2017) – The Stonehill College women's volleyball team fell to Franklin Pierce University, 3-0, Saturday afternoon at Merkert Gymnasium with set scores of 20-25, 24-26, 22-25 in Northeast-10 Conference play.

Stonehill's (4-9, 1-2 NE10) junior outside hitter Allyson Hughes (Modesto, California/Big Valley Christian) tallied a match-high 14 kills, while freshman setter Jessica Givens (Albuquerque, New Mexico/St. Pius X) notched her second-career double-double with 34 assists and 14 digs. Sophomore Rachel Dunlavy (Brighton, Michigan/Father Gabriel Richard) recorded three service aces, while Katherine DeLanty (Smithtown, New York/Smithtown) chipped in 11 kills and Claire Manuszak (Indianapolis, Indiana/Bishop Chatard) registered 17 digs.

Franklin Pierce (4-10, 2-1 NE10) saw Hannah St. Jean and Danielle Varricchio tally 10 kills each, while Varricchio and Jocelyn Moody recorded 20 and 10 digs, respectively. Brittany Carias registered four service aces in the win, as St. Jean totaled four blocks.

Stonehill and Franklin Pierce tallied 15 kills in the first set, but the Ravens' kept the lead throughout the whole first set. The Skyhawks came within four, 19-23, with a 10-5 run, but Franklin Pierce tallied two final points in the first frame to take the set, 25-20.

The Ravens took the first point of the second set, but Stonehill ran with the lead, 7-6, before Franklin Pierce took the lead back, 10-7. With a 15-7 run, the Skyhawks took back the lead, 22-17, but the Ravens tied up the set, 24-24, and finished the frame with back-to-back points for a 26-24 second game.

With nine tied scores and seven lead changes, both Stonehill and Franklin Pierce tallied 13 kills in the third set. The Skyhawks fought back late in the frame with four-straight points, 22-24, but the Ravens took match point with a final kill by Varricchio, taking the match 25-22.

Stonehill hosts Bentley University on Tuesday, October 3 at 7:00 p.m. for its Purple and White match at Merkert Gymnasium.
