Skyhawks recognized their professors during the match
EASTON, Mass. (September 28, 2017) – The Stonehill College women's volleyball team was defeated in three-straight sets, 3-0, to the University of Bridgeport on Thursday night at Merkert Gymnasium with set scores of 20-25, 18-25, and 17-25. In between sets two and three, the Skyhawks recognized their professors for their hard work, dedication, commitment to academic excellence at Stonehill College.
Stonehill's (4-8) junior outside hitter Allyson Hughes (Modesto, California/Big Valley Christian) notched a team-high 10 kills for her third-straight match with double-digits, while senior Claire Manuszak (Indianapolis, Indiana/Bishop Chatard) recorded her eighth match of the season with double-digit digs, registering 16. Katherine DeLanty (Smithtown, New York/Smithtown West) totaled a team-high four blocks on the night.
Bridgeport's (6-8) Amanda Hennemann recorded a match-high 11 kills and Bruna Santos followed with 10 kills of her own. Sheri Middleton chipped in a total of seven blocks in the victory.
The Knights opened the first set with seven-straight points, 7-0, and extended its lead to 12, 18-6, with an 11-6 run. The Skyhawks were able to close the gap to six, 23-17, as a block by Marykay Nasby (Belle Plaine, Minnesota/Belle Plaine) and DeLanty set the tone with Stonehill's first block of the game. Stonehill scored three-straight points for a four-point deficit, but Bridgeport closed the game with a kill by Hennemann 25-20.
The Skyhawks took their first lead of the match in the second frame, 2-1, but the Knights pressured Stonehill by opening up the set with a night with a nine-point lead, 20-9. Stonehill fought back with a 9-5 run, including blocks by DeLanty, Ashley Hitchcock (Warrenville, Illinois/Benet Academy) and Jessica Givens (Albuquerque, New Mexico/St. Pius X). Bridgeport was able to take the second set with another kill by Hennemann, 25-18.
Bridgeport's .357 hitting percentage in the third frame was the game decider, even though Stonehill tied up the set four times, 5-5. With eight-straight points, Bridgeport held a seven-point advantage, 12-5. Stonehill came within five, 10-15, but 10-7 run by the Knights wrapped up the match with a 25-17 third set.
Stonehill wraps up the month of September with a Northeast-10 Conference match against Franklin Pierce University on Saturday, September 30 in Merkert Gymnasium with a start time of 1:00 p.m.
