Women’s Volleyball Splits in Final Day of Lock Haven Tournament

Hughes records a career and match-high 21 kills against Lock Haven

Delanty assisted the Skyhawks with its first win tallying 16 kills 

LOCK HAVEN, Pa. (September 3, 2016) - The Stonehill women's volleyball team won split its final two matches of the Lock Haven Tournament Saturday afternoon. The Skyhawks dropped its first match of the day to University of Charleston (W.Va.), 3-0, but later defeated Lock Haven University for its first victory of the season, 3-2.

Match 1: Charleston (W.Va.) 3, Stonehill 0

The University of Charleston (W.Va.) blanked Stonehill in three frames with set scores of 16-25, 20-25, and 20-25.

Junior Marykay Nasby (Belle Plaine, Minn./Belle Plaine) led the Skyhawks with nine kills, as classmate Katherine DeLanty (Smithtown, N.Y./Smithtown West) recorded seven kills.

The Golden Eagles' Jordan Wittekind recorded a match-high of 10 kills as Janeese VerVelde totaled four blocks in the three-set match victory.

Charleston (W.Va.) led throughout the entire match as its hitting percentage surpassed Stonehill's. With only 28 total kills, the Skyhawks was not able to capitalize, as the Golden Eagles tallied 38 total kills and acted as a defensive wall notching 14 blocks.

Match 2: Stonehill 3, Lock Haven 2

Stonehill and Lock Haven University traded sets, until the Skyhawks came up on top in the fifth set, earning its first victory of the 2016 season. The Bald Eagles fell to Stonehill with set scores of 25-23, 22-25, 27-25, 26-28, and 16-14.

Three of Lock Haven's players also tallied double-digit kills including Sarah Gomish (18), Gabrielle Stick (12) and Breanna McDonald (10). Gomish also notched a double-double by registering 12 digs.

Sophomore Allyson Hughes (Modesto, Calif./Big Valley Christian) recorded a career and match-high of 21 kills, as three other teammates tallied double-digit kills. Nasby notched her second double-double of the season, notching 16 kills and 13 digs, while DeLanty and sophomore Megan Pennino (Wantagh, N.Y./Wantagh) registered 16 and 12 kills, respectively.

The Skyhawks were able to out-block the Bald Eagles 15-13, while also dominating with 70 kills to Lock Haven's 58 total kills.

Stonehill opens a five-match home slate that begins with the Skyhawk Invitational that includes Saint Michael's College, Felician College and Dominican College of New York from Friday, September 9 to Saturday, September 10.
