New Haven Sweeps Women’s Volleyball in Three, 3-0, on Senior Night

Hitchcock and Dunlavy tally double-digit digs

EASTON, Mass. (November 11, 2016) – The Stonehill College women's volleyball team was blanked by Northeast-10 Conference foe the University of New Haven in three sets on Friday night at Merkert Gymnasium. Stonehill fell in set scores of 25-16, 25-13 and 25-18.

Prior to the match, Stonehill honored its two seniors, including Taylor Stevens (Foster, R.I./Ponaganset) and Abby Harte (Dover, N.H./Dover).

Hitchcock recorded a match-high 15 kills in the loss

Stonehill (12-13, 7-7 NE-10) saw Katherine DeLanty (Smithtown, N.Y./Smithtown West) with a team-high six kills, while Ashley Hitchcock (Warrenville, Ill./Benet Academy) and Rachel Dunlavy (Brighton, Mich./Father Gabriel Richard) tallied 15 and 10 digs apiece.

New Haven (16-8, 11-3 NE-10) had Meghan Kennelly record a match-high 10 kills, as Kristine Rios and Annika Hacker register 14 and 13 assists, respectively. Charleigh Crews also notched 14 digs in the victory.

New Haven controlled the first set recording its highest hitting percentage of the match, .346, as Stonehill was able to knot the frame twice. The Skyhawks picked up five-straight points while DeLanty was serving, but the Chargers went on an 11-4 rally to close the first set, 25-16.

The Chargers came out running once again in the second set, as Stonehill tied the frame once more, 2-2. The Skyhawks were only able to tally back-to-back points, as Hitchcock served to a two-point deficit, 7-9. The Chargers extended the lead to 12, 24-12, its largest of the match, before taking set point, 25-13.

Stonehill saw its first lead of the match as it opened the third set, 10-8. New Haven bounced back with a 10-1 run, 18-11, as it took the lead for the rest of the game, taking match point 25-18.

Stonehill wrapped up the regular season 12-13 overall and 7-7 in Northeast-10 Conference play. The Skyhawks await to see their fate in Northeast-10 Tournament play: if Franklin Pierce University loses its match tomorrow, Stonehill will be in the tournament, if the Ravens lose, Stonehill will be out of the tournament.
