Women’s Volleyball Fights Past SNHU, 3-0

Hitchcock tallies match-high 17 kills

Stevens recorded 45 assists in the victory

EASTON, Mass. (September 27, 2016) – The Stonehill women's volleyball team defeated Northeast-10 Conference foe Southern New Hampshire University, 3-0 by set scores of 26-24, 26-24, and 25-23 in Tuesday night's Purple and White match at Merkert Gymnasium.  

Stonehill (6-5, 1-1 NE-10) junior Ashley Hitchcock (Warrenville, Ill./Benet Academy) recorded a match-high 17 kills, while classmate Marykay Nasby (Belle Plaine, Minn./Belle Plaine) tallied 12 kills. Senior setter Taylor Stevens (Foster, R.I./Ponaganset) registered 45 assists on the night.

Southern New Hampshire's (2-12, 0-2 NE-10) Marisa Coronis posted a team-high nine kills, while Megan Salamun followed with eight.

In the first set, the Skyhawks saw its first lead early on in the game, 5-2, but the Penmen fought back with a 7-1 run, 9-6, picking up its first lead. Stonehill persisted as a 10-2 run opened up the set, 16-11. The Penmen came within one, 18-19, but Stonehill drove the set home with a 6-2 run giving the Skyhawks the opening frame, 26-24.

Stonehill's .371 hitting percentage was the highest of the night, which outlasted Southern New Hampshire's .194 clip in the second set, putting the Skyhawks up 2-0 with 26-24 set win.

Stonehill came out running with a 12-5 advantage in the third set, but Southern New Hampshire came within one, 18-19, as the Penmen rallied on a 13-7 run. The Skyhawks continued driving the frame with its .235 hitting percentage, closing the match with a kill by Megan Pennino (Wantagh, N.Y./Wantagh), 25-23.

Stonehill hosts Saint Michael's College in a Northeast-10 matchup on Saturday, October 1 at 1 p.m. in the Merkert Gymnasium.
