#42 Women's Tennis Clinches Title Share at #48 Adelphi, 5-2

Downey clinched the Skyhawks win with her victory at No. 5 singles.

Skyhawks take five of six singles points to earn share of third-straight NE10 regular season title and top seed for NE10 Tournament

GARDEN, CITY, N.Y. (October 14, 2018) – Stonehill College, ranked No. 42 in the most recent Oracle/Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Division II rankings, won five of six singles points to take a 5-2 decision over No. 48 Adelphi University in Northeast-10 Conference women's tennis action at Adelphi Tennis Courts today.

Stonehill clinches at least a share of its third-straight NE10 regular season title, as well as the top seed for the upcoming NE10 Tournament, with its 22nd-straight regular season Conference win, a streak that dates back to a 5-4 setback to Adelphi on October 9, 2016. Senior Nicole Downey provided the match-clinching point for the Skyhawks with her 6-1, 6-1 victory at No. 5 singles against Adelphi freshman Ashley Mannetta (Islip, New York/Islip). The Skyhawks are now two games in front of second-place Merrimack College, who they defeated 6-1 earlier in the week, in the NE10 standings with two dual matches remaining.

Junior Alexandra Vo rallied from a set down to remain unbeaten in NE10 regular season singles matches (30-0) after a 5-7, 6-4, 7-6 (7-5) triumph at No. 2 singles against sophomore Nicole Kielan. Freshmen Samantha Ormesher and Emma Markaryan also earned valuable singles wins for the Skyhawks at No. 3 and No. 4 singles, respectively. Markaryan held off a tough battle from junior Nicole Stay for a 6-4, 7-6 (7-5) decision.

Despite giving away a point at No. 6 singles and a doubles decision at No. 3, Adelphi was level entering singles play after posting comfortable wins at No. 1 and 2 doubles. Kielan and senior Samantha Perri won 6-1 at No. 1 to clinch the doubles point for the Panthers after Stay and senior Karen Serina won 6-2 at No. 2. Perri was a double-winner on the afternoon for the Panthers, adding a 6-1, 6-2 victory at No. 1 singles against Stonehill sophomore Isabelle Porter, ranked 15th in the Oracle/ITA East Region rankings, dealing her her first loss in 16 NE10 singles matches.

Stonehill (9-1, 9-0 NE10) returns to the courts on Thursday, when it visits Southern New Hampshire University, ranked No. 10 in the Oracle/ITA East Region Rankings, for an NE10 match at 3 p.m. Adelphi (9-3, 8-3 NE10) is off until it opens NE10 Tournament play on either October 24 or 26.
