Takenaka leads three double-winners for Friars

EAST PROVIDENCE, R.I. (April 4, 2019) – Division I Providence College rode its point earned from two doubles wins to a 4-3 victory over Stonehill College, ranked No. 40 in this week's Oracle/Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Division II national rankings, in non-conference women's tennis action at Centre Court this afternoon.

Senior Risa Takenaka and junior Aidan Epstein led a trio of double-winners for Providence. The duo combined to clinch the doubles point that proved to be the difference in the match, with their 6-4 decision at No. 1. Takenaka followed that up with a 6-2, 6-4 win over Stonehill sophomore Isabelle Porter, ranked No. 12 in the Oracle/ITA Division II East Region singles rankings, at No. 1 singles. Epstein added a 6-3, 6-3 win at No. 4 singles against sophomore Bethany Hammond.

Junior Natalie Pitocco rounded out the double-winners for Providence. She teamed up with sophomore Grace Goyette for a 6-1 win at No. 3 doubles and then posted a 7-5, 6-2 win at No. 6 singles for the Friars.

Stonehill spit the three singles matches in the dual, led by junior Alexandra Vo , ranked No. 14 in the Oracle/ITA East Region singles rankings, who notched a 6-4, 6-3 win at No. 2 single against Providence freshman Haley Gurski. Freshmen Samantha Ormesher and Emma Markaryan also picked up singles wins for the Skyhawks. Ormesher posted a 6-2, 6-4 win against freshman Mimi Dailey at No. 3 singles, while Markaryan battled past sophomore Sera Satkowski, 6-0, 4-6, 6-2 at No. 5.

Stonehill (13-4, 11-0 NE10) returns to action in its buildup to an NCAA Tournament appearance, on Friday, April 12, when it hosts College of the Holy Cross at Charles Watt Tennis Courts at 5 p.m. Providence (4-15, 0-0 BIG EAST) hosts Villanova University tomorrow at 3 p.m.
