Skyhawks named ITA All-Academic Team for second time, while five student-athletes earn ITA Scholar-Athlete status

EASTON, Mass. (July 31, 2019) – The Stonehill College women's tennis program was recognized for its efforts in the classroom with All-Academic Team status from the Intercollegiate Tennis Association, while five Skyhawks were also named to the ITA's Scholar-Athlete team.

Stonehill earns ITA All-Academic Team status for recording a team cumulative grade point average of 3.20 or above, with the team logging a team GPA of 3.361 over the academic year. Additionally, recent graduate Nicole Downey, rising seniors Annelise Howick, Anastasiya Shyianok and Alexandra Vo and rising sophomore Samantha Ormesher all earned ITA Scholar-Athlete status for having a 3.50 GPA or above for the 2018-19 academic year. The Skyhawks are among three Northeast-10 Conference programs to earn ITA All-Academic Team honors and their student-athletes are among 12 NE10 student-athletes recognized individually.

Downey, who graduated this spring with a Bachelor's Degree in health science, recorded a 3.68 grade point average for the 2018-19 academic year. She earns ITA All-Academic honors for the fourth-straight year and has been named to the NE10 Academic Honor Roll status all eight semesters, collecting Academic Distinction status both semesters of her senior year for having a semester GPA between 3.50 and 3.99, while being named to the Athletic Director's Honor Roll six semesters. Downey received the Saint Thomas Aquinas, Patron Saint of Students, Medal for the first time in April for having the highest cumulative GPA on the team.

Downey is a three-time All-NE10 performer over her Stonehill career, earning first team honors at No. 3 doubles with junior Caroline Ray last fall, to go with third team honors at both No. 4 and 5 singles over the course of her career as well as a spot on the NE10 All-Rookie Team as a freshman. Downey finished her collegiate career with a 96-38 combined record in singles and doubles play, posting a 61-19 singles record, including 37-4 in the NE10, while finishing 35-19 in doubles, including a 25-3 doubles mark. She appeared in 19 matches for the Skyhawks during her senior year, finishing with a combined record of 22-8 in singles and doubles play, including a 13-4 singles mark, winning all ten NE10 matches, and a 9-4 doubles mark, including 7-0 in the NE10.

Howick, a health science major who recorded a 3.84 grade point average during the 2018-19 academic year, earns ITA All-Academic Honors for the first time. She has been named to the NE10 Academic Honor Roll all six semesters to date, with Academic Distinction status both semesters this past year for having a semester GPA between 3.50 and 3.99, and earned Athletic Director's Honor Roll status two semesters.

Howick has posted a combined career record of 35-33 in singles and doubles play, posting a 26-23 career doubles mark, including 13-7 in the NE10, to go with a 9-10 singles record, having won all four of her NE10 singles matches. She teamed up with Vo as the No. 9-ranked doubles team in the Oracle/ITA East Region rankings last fall and reached the quarterfinals of the USTA/ITA Division II East Regional in September.

Shyianok, a business administration major who recorded a 3.72 grade point average over the 2018-19 academic year, earns ITA All-Academic honors for the first time. The transfer from Kozminski University in Warsaw, Poland, earned Athletic Director's Honor Roll and NE10 Academic Honor Roll status, receiving Academic Distinction honors from the NE10 for having a semester GPA between 3.50 and 3.99 each semester. She competed in four events in her first year at Stonehill, posting a 2-2 singles record, including 2-1 in NE10 matches.

Vo, an environmental engineering major who posted a 3.85 grade point average over the 2018-19 academic year, earned ITA All-Academic accolades for the first time. She has been named to the NE10 Academic Honor Roll three-straight semesters, receiving Academic Distinction status each of the last two semesters for having a GPA between 3.50 and 3.99, while earning Athletic Director's Honor Roll both semesters as well.

Vo, the 2016 NE10 Rookie of the Year, is a five-time All-NE10 performer over the course of her career, earning first team honors four times, including twice at No. 2 singles. She is currently ranked No. 15 in the latest Oracle/ITA Division II East Region singles rankings and has also been ranked regionally for doubles over career. Vo reached the quarterfinals of the USTA/ITA East Regional doubles championship with Howick and advanced to the singles round of 16 at the event two-straight years. She enters her senior year with a combined record of 79-42 in singles and doubles play over her Stonehill career, posting a 40-13 singles mark, which includes a perfect 32-0 record in NE10 play, to go with a 39-29 doubles record, including 26-9 in the NE10. Vo posted a combined 29-15 record this past season, including a 17-4 singles record (9-0 NE10).

Ormesher, a health science major with a 3.61 grade point average over her first two college semesters, also earned ITA All-Academic honors for the first time. She was named to the Athletic Director's Honor Roll and NE10 Academic Honor Roll both semesters as a freshman, earning Academic Distinction recognition for having a semester GPA between 3.50 and 3.99 during the fall.

Ormesher collected a pair of All-NE10 honors in her first collegiate season, with first team accolades at No. 3 singles and second team honors at No. 2 doubles. She finished the year with a combined record of 24-14 in singles and doubles play, posting a 12-7 record in both, including a 9-2 NE10 record in both disciplines as well. Ormesher was named the Most Outstanding Player for the NE10 Championships, helping the Skyhawks win the NE10 tournament title for the first time since 2013, and was an NE10 All-Rookie Team pick as well.

Stonehill's 2019 fall schedule is expected to be released in the coming days as the Skyhawks enter the season winners of three-straight NE10 regular season championships, having also claimed the NE10 tournament title as well last fall on its way to a 13th NCAA Division II Tournament bid. The Skyhawks enter the fall winners of 24-straight NE10 regular season matches.
