Barbetta/Porter Make History as Women's Tennis Wraps Up at ITA East Regional


Vo joined Porter in the Round of 16, upsetting the tournament No. 5 seed along the way.

Skyhawk duo's march to doubles semis the program's deepest run in history

FLUSHING, N.Y. (September 24, 2017) – Senior Victoria Barbetta (Wesley Chapel, Florida/Saddlebrook Prep (Fla.)) and freshman Isabelle Porter (Jupiter, Florida/William T. Dwyer) made program history for the Stonehill College women's tennis team by reaching the semifinal round of the doubles championship at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Division II East Regional, presented by Oracle, being hosted by Adelphi University and Queens College, at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center today.

Barbetta and Porter were seeded No. 7 in the tournament and advanced to day three with two wins on Saturday after winning their opening round match on Friday. The Stonehill pairing started with an 8-3 win over Mana Seifaei and Lauren Persson from Merrimack College, before adding an 8-3 win over Southern New Hampshire University's Sofia Morais and Anna Sala. Today, the Skyhawks defeated Merrimack's Mia Briggs and Cassie Restrepo, 8-5, in the quarterfinals, before dropping an 8-1 decision in the semifinal round to No. 2-seed Alessia Rossetti and Lena Dimmer of New York Tech. The NYIT pairing will face 12th-seeded Anna Hortelano Pey and Fredrika Regner from Goldey-Beacom College in Monday's final.

Porter had a breakout tournament for Stonehill as she also reached the Round of 16 in the main draw of the singles championship after emerging from the qualifying rounds on Friday. She opened Saturday with a 6-2, 2-6, 10-2 triumph over Wilmington University's Begona Gomer in the Round of 64. Porter followed that up with a 6-3, 6-3 victory against Emy Alplund from Queens. Dimmer, who has reached the singles semifinals as the top seed, ended Porter's run with a 6-4, 6-0 win in today's Round of 16.

Sophomore Alexandra Vo (Washington Crossing, Pennsylvania/Nazareth Academy) had a strong weekend, also advancing to the Round of 16 in the singles championship. Vo advanced through Friday's qualifying round and then opened the championship main draw with a 7-5, 6-0 win against Josefina Torres Martin from Concordia. She followed that up by breezing past No. 5-seed Laura Ortega Jover from Queens in the Round of 32. Vo's run ended today with a 6-3, 6-3 setback to 9th-seeded Pey.

Barbetta and junior Nicole Downey (Groveland, Massachusetts/Pentucket Regional), who advanced to the main draw through the Friday qualifiers, were each defeated in the Round of 64 in the main draw on Saturday, with Barbetta going three sets against Persson.

Vo and freshman Kate Cunningham (Somerset, England/IMG Academy (Fla.)) teamed up to reach the Round of 16 in the doubles championship. After Friday's opening round win, the duo upset No. 3-seed Jover and Reehan Rashad from Queens, 8-3, in the Round of 32, before being defeated by finalists Pey/Regner in the Round of 16.

Stonehill (5-0, 3-0 NE-10) returns to action on Wednesday, when it visits Franklin Pierce University for a Northeast-10 Conference match at 2:30 p.m. The Skyhawks host Saint Anselm College on Saturday, September 30, at 2 p.m.
