Women's Tennis Wins Opener Over Wheaton, 9-0

Barbetta leads Skyhawks with wins at No. 1 singles and doubles

EASTON, Mass. (September 9, 2017) – Stonehill College, ranked No. 6 in the most recent Oracle/Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Division II East Regional rankings, opened its season with a 9-0 victory over Wheaton College in non-conference women's tennis action on Charles Watt Tennis Courts tonight.

Senior Victoria Barbetta (Wesley Chapel, Florida/Saddlebrook Prep) and sophomore Alexandra Vo (Washington Crossing, Pennsylvania/Nazareth Academy) led four double-winners for Stonehill on the night. Barbetta rallied from dropping the first set 6-0, to take the second 6-2 and then the tiebreaker 10-7 to earn a win at No. 1 singles over Ines de Bracamonte. Barbetta also teamed up with freshman Isabelle Porter (Jupiter, Florida/William T. Dwyer) for an 8-4 win at No. 1 doubles.

Vo and sophomore Annelise Howick (Jacksonville, Florida/Creekside) combined for an 8-2 win at No. 2 doubles and then Vo added a straight sets win at No. 2 singles against Isabelle Garvanne. Porter was also a double-winner in her collegiate debut, adding a 6-2, 6-0 win at No. 4 singles, while senior Colleen O'Donnell (Waterville, Maine/Waterville) chipped in wins at No. 5 singles and No. 3 doubles, with freshman Bethany Hammond (Belgrade, Maine/Saint Dominic's), to round out the Skyhawks double-winners.

Stonehill (1-0, 0-0 NE10) returns to action on Tuesday, when it visits Division I College of the Holy Cross for a non-conference clash at 4 p.m. The Skyhawks return home next Saturday, September 16, when it opens its Northeast-10 Conference schedule with an NE10 Championship and NCAA Tournament rematch with Adelphi University at Watt Courts at 11 a.m.
