EASTON, Mass. (January 21, 2023) – Stonehill College used a second quarter surge to grab a nine-point halftime lead and made it stand in notching a 56-49 victory over Long Island University in Northeast Conference women's basketball action on Paula Sullivan Court at Merkert Gymnasium this afternoon.

Fifth-year guard Emily Bramanti drained six of Stonehill's ten three-pointers in the contest, including 4-of-6 in scoring 12 of the Skyhawks 23 second quarter points, on her way to a double-double performance of 21 points and a season-high ten rebounds. She finished 7-of-15 from the floor, including 6-for-12 from beyond the arc, while adding two assists and two steals to her first double-double of the season (third career).

Postgrad Maddie Loder joined Bramanti in double-figures with ten points, two assists and three steals, while fifth-year Sophie Glidden chipped in eight points, seven boards (four offensive), two assists, two blocked shots and a steal.

Postgrad Shyan Mwai was the lone LIU player in double-figures with 17 points on 6-of-12 shooting, three rebounds, four steals, three blocked shots and an assist. Senior Cristina Bernejo added seven points, six rebounds, two assists, three steals and a block for the Sharks.

LIU led by five (11-6) with a three-pointer from freshman Mariah Elohim with 1:57 remaining in the first quarter. Stonehill scored the last four points of the frame, capped by a putback from sophomore Maureen Stapleton at the buzzer to draw back within a point (11-10) heading to the second.

LIU held a three-point lead (16-13) after a three-point play from Mwai 2:18 into the second quarter. Stonehill caught fire from there behind the three-point shooting of Bramanti who canned two three-pointers, along with a triple by sophomore Sharn Hayward, to grab an eight-point lead (25-17) with 4:42 remaining in the half. The Skyhawks outscored the Sharks 23-13 in the second frame, and finished the half with an 11-0 advantage in points off the visitors 14 turnovers in the first 20-minutes.

Bramanti sent Stonehill into halftime with a nine-point cushion (33-24) with her fourth triple of the quarter. The Skyhawks extended their lead to 11 (38-27) after three-pointer from freshman Melissa Whitmore a minute and a half into the third quarter. Bramanti's sixth three-pointer of the day matched Stonehill's largest lead of the day (44-33) midway through the third.

Bermejo opened the fourth quarter with a three-pointer that pulled LIU back within five (45-40). The Sharks crept back within a possession (47-44) for the first time since the second quarter with a jumper in the paint by junior Ashley Austin with 4:21 remaining, but Stonehill responded with the next five points, including a layup from Bramanti, to reclaim an eight-point cushion (52-44) with 2:24 on the clock and closed the win out from there.
