EASTON, Mass. (November 21, 2022) – Stonehill College made history by posting a 62-35 victory over the University of Hartford to claim its first win at the NCAA Division I level in a non-conference women's basketball matchup on Paula Sullivan Court at Merkert Gymnasium tonight.

Fifth-year Sophie Glidden led the way for Stonehill with the first double-double of her career as she scored a season-high 14 points on 7-of-11 shooting, with ten rebounds. Sophomore Maureen Stapleton pulled down a career-high 13 rebounds to aid in the Skyhawks posting a 49-33 rebounding advantage in the contest. Stonehill shot 44.4-percent from the floor on the night, while limiting Hartford to 22.6%.

How it Happened

  • Stonehill jumped out to a quick eight-point lead (10-2) less than three minutes into the game, keyed by three-pointers from Bramanti and Loder after the two teams traded baskets to start.
  • Stonehill stretched its lead to 12 (18-6) after a putback from Stapleton with four minutes remaining in the first quarter.
  • Hartford outscored Stonehill 7-2 over the remainder of the opening frame to close the gap to seven (20-13) after a layup from sophomore Nayeli Dowding.
  • Forbes pulled the Hawks back within five (20-15), but Stonehill took an 11-point lead (28-17) into halftime after a second quarter in which the teams combined for 12 points.
  • Stonehill opened the second half with a quick 8-2 spurt to open a 17-point advantage (36-19) after Loder drained a three and then split two free-throws two minutes in.
  • Hartford trimmed the deficit to 12 (36-24) at the media timeout after a Zaiha Minnis three-pointer.
  • Stonehill emerged from the break and started to pull away for good, running out to a 22-point lead (46-24) after a three-pointer from sophomore Sharn Hayward with 1:33 left in the third after Loder netted five-straight points.
  • Stonehill carried a 20-point lead (48-28) into the final quarter and opened that gap to 28 (58-30) after a four-point play from freshman Chelsea Graiver with 4:10 to play, before peaking at 30 in the final minute.

Noteworthy

  • Tonight marked the seventh meeting all-time between Stonehill and Hartford, but the first since November 30, 1985. The Skyhawks are now 7-0 all-time against the Hawks after tonight's win, including a 3-0 mark at Merkert Gym.
  • Ten of the 11 Skyhawks who played tonight scored at least a point for the second-straight game.
  • Glidden pulled down double-figure rebounds for the third time this season and seventh time in her career overall. Stapleton finished with double-digit boards for the second time this season – third career.
  • Loder scored in double-figures for the 15th time in her career, including her four-year career at George Washington University.
  • Stonehill has outrebounding four of its five opponents this season.

Stonehill (1-4, 0-0 NEC) returns to action this weekend, when it participates in the TD Bank Classic in Burlington, Vermont, starting against host University of Vermont on Saturday at noon. The Skyhawks next home game is Wednesday, December 14, when they host UAlbany at Merkert Gym at 6 p.m. Hartford (0-4) heads to the Friar Thanksgiving Classic this weekend, facing host Providence College on Friday at 1 p.m.
