Buffalo Pushes Past Women's Basketball, 62-56

 

Ogden three seals Bulls first win as Young nets game-high 16 off the bench

EASTON, Mass. (November 14, 2022) – University of Buffalo shot nearly 56-percent from the field in the second half in securing its first win of the season with a 62-56 decision over Stonehill College in the first NCAA Division I women's basketball contest played on Paula Sullivan Court at Merkert Gymnasium tonight.

Fifth-year Jazmine Young and postgrad Re'Shawna Stone combined for 30 points to lead the way for Buffalo, but it was a three-pointer from freshman Hattie Ogden with 97-seconds to play to fuel a game-clinching eight-point run in the final two minutes that sealed the win for the Bulls.

Senior Mia Kelly paced Stonehill with a season-high 13 points, with four rebounds, four assists and a steal.

How it Happened

  • Buffalo finished the first quarter with a 9-2 run to open a seven-point lead (17-10) after a fastbreak layup from Stone with 1:49 remaining in the first.
  • Stonehill pulled back within two (18-16) on a layup from freshman Colleen McCullagh 2:14 into the second quarter.
  • Young quieted the Stonehill push with a three-pointer, but the Skyhawks worked their way back even (22-22) after two Kelly free-throws with 4:27 left in the half.
  • The teams traded baskets the remainder of the quarter and finished the half knotted at 25-25.
  • Fifth-year Kiara Johnson gave the Bulls a pair of four-point cushions over the first two and a half minutes of the third quarter, but sophomore Maureen Stapleton scored five-straight points with a three-pointer and putback inside to grab the lead (32-21) with 6:22 left in the third.
  • Buffalo scored seven-straight, including a three-point play from Young, to reclaim a six-point lead (40-34) after a Winfield layup with 2:13 to go.
  • Buffalo carried an eight-point lead (44-36) into the final frame, but Kelly buried a three and Glidden scored inside to quickly pull Stonehill back within a possession (44-41) less than a minute in.
  • After Young split two free-throws, Bramanti pulled Stonehill within two (45-43) with 7:50 to play.
  • Junior Cameron Ward knotted the score (47-47) and then postgrad Maddie Loder drained a three-pointer to push the Skyhawks back in front midway through the quarter.
  • Glidden scored a driving layup with 3:42 to play, but Buffalo followed with eight straight points to clinch the win, keyed by an Ogden three that extended the lead to two possessions on the Bulls way to a seven-point lead (59-52) after two Young free-throws with 30-seconds left.

Noteworthy

  • Tonight marked the first NCAA Division I home game in Stonehill women's basketball history.
  • Stapleton finished with a career-high seven points, to go with seven rebounds.
  • McCullagh chipped in a season-high six points and four rebounds (three offensive).
  • Buffalo shot 55.6-percent (15-for-27) from the floor in the second half.
  • Stonehill outscored Buffalo 35-26 in the second and fourth quarters, but the Bulls posted a 36-21 edge in the first and third.
  • Kelly posted her tenth career double-figure scoring game.
  • Stonehill pulled down 15 offensive rebounds, finishing with a 13-4 advantage in second chance points.
