EASTON, Mass. (April 23, 2022)- In two hard-fought games in their Northeast-10 Conference doubleheader against the University of New Haven, the Stonehill College softball team dropped both contests 2-1 at Father Gartland Field Saturday afternoon.

Game one: Stonehill 1, New Haven 2

Standout Performances:

Key Moments

  • Neither side saw a run through the first three and a half innings as it was a pitcher's duel between Stonehill's Skylar Brandemarte and New Haven's Selena Aponte. Throughout the first three innings, Brandemarte retired nine straight batters and in that stretch, she induced a clutch inning-ending double play in the second.
  • In the bottom half of the third, Stonehill got on the board first when Wodarski sent a single back up the middle which allowed Kelly to score after she had singled earlier in the inning.
  • However, in the top of the sixth, the Chargers tied the game at one off a solo home run to center off the bat of Hailey Laforte
  • Stonehill threatened in the bottom of the seventh after Wodarski moved up Brochu to second and Nardelli advanced to third. Despite having runners in scoring position, Aponte got out of the jam when induced a groundout to force extra innings.
  • Laforte continued her strong afternoon when she launched her second home run to right which proved to be the eventual game-winning run.

Pitching Records:

Win: New Haven- Selena Aponte (8-8)

Loss: Stonehill-Skylar Brandemarte (10-8)

Game two: Stonehill 1, New Haven 2

Standout Performances

Key Moments:

  • In game two, New Haven struck first as Maeve Lougheed collected an RBI on a double to right field.
  • Despite the Chargers scoring first, Stonehill starter, Kelly Mayette kept the New Haven offense at bay including a point in the top half of the third when she forced an early double play followed by a flyout to end the frame.
  • After being shut out throughout the first five innings, the Skyhawks tied the game late when Hammond drove in Alyssa Grossi on an RBI single. Grossi was the first runner for Stonehill in the inning after she had singled up the middle.
  • However, in the seventh, New Haven recaptured the lead off a Mya Case solo home run that made it 2-1 heading into the bottom of the seventh.
  • Stonehill kept things interesting after Shannon Conte singled through the right side to start the inning. Despite the lead-off single, the Skyhawks, unfortunately, could not bring Conte home as New Haven starter, Mia Iodice retired the next three batters for the narrow victory.

Pitching Records:

Win: New Haven-Mia Iodice (7-8)

Loss: Stonehill- Kelly Mayette (3-11)
