Softball Tops Mercyhurst College, Falls to Felician College

AUBURNDALE, Fla. (March 11, 2022)- The Stonehill College softball team split another day of a doubleheader as they defeated Mercyhurst College, 3-2, and then came up short against Felician College, 3-1, on Friday afternoon.

Game 1: Stonehill 3-Mercyhurst College 2

Key Moments:

  • Stonehill jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead after Chloe Kelly hit an RBI single that scored May Dawes who had reached from a single that led off the inning. In the next at-bat, Alexa Adinolfi ripped a hard hit to second base where the fielder misplayed the ball allowing Alexandra Hammond to score after she had walked earlier in the frame. 
  • The Lakers ended up getting one run back after Sarah Koscho hit an RBI single to right field to make it 2-1.
  • However, the Skyhawks pushed the lead back to two (3-1) after Kelly collected her second RBI of the day when she drove in Maeve Proulx
  • Mercyhurst cut the lead back down to one again in the seventh (3-2), however, Brandemarte retired the next batter on a groundout to secure the Skyhawks 3-2 win.

Game 2: Stonehill College 1 Felician College 3

Standout Performances:

Key Moments:

  • Early in the game, Stonehill struck first after Kelly hit a sacrifice that ended up scoring Shannon Conte after she had singled to start off the inning. 
  • In the second inning, Felician reclaimed the lead after a solo home run from Alexis Velotta, and then Jaylene Sierra ended up scoring on a past ball.
  • The Skyhawks threatened in the top half of the fourth when Megan Weis was able to get to third after reaching from an error by the Felician pitcher. In the next at-bat, Kelly had singled and then stolen second to give Stonehill runners in scoring position with one out. Unfortunately, Martarina Crumb ended the Skyhawks rally after she retired the next two Skyhawks batters.
  • Felician tacked on one more run in the fifth when Sierra hit a solo home run that made it 3-1. 
  • On the mound for Stonehill, Kelly Mayette drew the start and went 4.1 innings, and gave up two earned runs while striking out four. Skylar Brandemarte took over for Mayette midway through the fourth and only surrendered two hits, gave up no runs, and struck out one. 

Up Next:

Stonehill returns home from Florida after both their games tomorrow are canceled due to weather and will have much-deserved rest. The squad will then resume play when they start Northeast-10 Conference play hosting The College of Saint Rose for a weekend series starting on Saturday, March 26 at 12 p.m.
