Stonehill Falls to No.20 Minnesota State University - Mankato, 9-1

CLERMONT, Fla. (March 10)- In a late addition to their schedule, the Stonehill College softball team took on the No.20 Minnesota State University - Mankato but fell by a score of 9-1. Despite the loss, junior Courtney Brochu collected her team-leading seventh RBI which also currently ranks her within the top-five of the Northeast-10 Conference at fourth.

Key Moments

  • The Mavericks struck early in the first two innings going up by a score of 2-0 courtesy of RBI singles in each inning from Madi Newman and Cheyenne Behrends
  • Despite the early lead, Stonehill starter, Skylar Brandemarte kept the Mavericks at bay in the third including getting out of a jam with runners on first and second to end the inning. 
  • However, Minnesota State broke things open in the fourth scoring seven runs (9-0) that featured two-run RBI singles from Kylie Sullivan and Katie Bracken
  • In the bottom half of the inning, Stonehill got one run back (9-1) after Brochu ripped a single up the middle and drove in Nardelli who had doubled to lead off the inning. 
  • The Skyhawks threatened in the bottom of the fifth when Kelly laid down a perfect bunt to load the bases with one out. Katelin Price was on second (hit by a pitch in her at-bat) and Megan Weis on third after she pinch ran for Alyssa Grossi who drew a walk. Unfortunately, Mavericks pitcher Mackenzie Ward retired the next two batters to secure the win for Minnesota State.

Stonehill resumes double-header action when they take on Mercyhurst College at 10:15 a.m. and Felician College at 12:30 p.m. Minnesota State leaves Florida and then hosts Missouri Southern on Friday, March 18 at 2 p.m.
