EASTON, Mass. (November 13, 2019) – The Stonehill College cross country junior Sam Curtin was most recently named the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) East Region Women's Athlete of the Year, as announced by the organization on Tuesday.

Curtin, who has been consistent since she stepped foot on campus, won her first race of her collegiate career taking the NCAA Division II East Region women's individual crown on November 9. At the Belmont Plateau in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Curtin clocked in a time of 22:19.1 in the six-kilometer race, hosted by Jefferson University. She finished four seconds ahead of the runner up from Southern New Hampshire University, Ashley Corcoran, 22:23.2.

The individual performance helped the Skyhawks to their 16th NCAA Division II East Region Title with 26 points. This helped punch the program's 20th-straight ticket to the NCAA Championships, which will be held Saturday, November 23 in Sacramento, California. At the East Regional Championship, Curtin was one of the seven runners for the Skyhawks that earned All-East Region honors and this was her third cross country accolade.

Prior to the East Regional Championship, Curtin was the first runner across the finish line for the Skyhawks at the Northeast-10 Conference Championship collecting her third cross country All-Conference honor with a third-place finish out of 136 competitors. She clocked in a time of 23:54.1 in the six-kilometer race on October 27.

With the women's 11-straight NE10 Cross Country Championship under their belt, the Skyhawks have won 13-straight Championships including cross country, indoor, and outdoor track & field. Over the past 19 NE10 Championships, Stonehill women have won 18.

The Plymouth, Massachusetts native has now totaled three USTFCCCA All-East Region honors, three All-Conference honors including two first team and one third team, two USTFCCCA All-Academic Team accolades, a NE10 Academic All-Conference honor in 2018, and a Division II ADA Academic Achievement Award following the 2018-19 season.

Both the men's and women's teams will travel to Sacramento, California to compete in the NCAA Division II Cross Country Championships, hosted by California State University, Sacramento and the Sacramento Sports Commission. The races will take place on Saturday, November 23 with the women's race beginning at 1 p.m., followed by the men's race at 2:15 p.m.
