NE10 Announces Fall Academic All-Conference Teams
Stonehill College NE10 Academic All-Conference Members
EASTON, Mass. (February 4, 2019) – Stonehill College has placed 10 of its fall student-athletes on the Northeast-10 Conference Academic All-Conference teams for their performances on the field of play as well as the classroom, the league announced Monday.
Stonehill's 10 student-athletes was the highest in the Conference for the fall programs spreading out over the seven fall teams, as Adelphi University saw nine named. Three teams saw eight named to the list as Bentley University, the College of Saint Rose and Southern New Hampshire University tied for fourth.
Among the Skyhawks' 10 included football senior Matt Haite and juniorDerek Ivey, volleyball senior Rachel Dunlavy, women's cross country senior Anna Lastra and junior Sam Curtin, men's cross country sophomore Nickolas McNamee, women's soccer seniors Kaitlin Brown and Emily Rosano, men's soccer senior Daniel Pereira, and field hockey junior McKenzie Woerner.
To be eligible for selection to the NE10 Academic All-Conference Teams a student-athlete must have met or exceeded the following minimum requirements: participated in at least half of the team's competitions and been either a starter or significant contributor, achieved a 3.30 cumulative grade point average, and completed at least one academic year at his/her institution.
Haite collects NE10 Academic All-Conference honors for the second-straight year, having earned a 3.40 cumulative grade point average as an economics major and sport commerce and culture minor at Stonehill. The National Football Foundation William V. Campbell Trophy® semifinalist has been named to the NE10 Academic Honor Roll the last five semesters, receiving Academic Distinction status for having a semester GPA between 3.50 and 3.99 the last two semesters, and Athletic Director's Honor Roll four semesters. Haite, a Don Hansen Football Gazette All-Super Region 1 third team selection, is a two-time All-NE10 kicker for Stonehill, earning first team honors this fall. He was named to The Fred Mitchell Award "Watch List" five times over his career, with preseason honors as a sophomore, junior and senior, while also receiving September honors this fall. Haite collected NE10 Special Teams Player of the Week accolades twice this fall, giving him the weekly honor four times over his career.
Haite finished second on the team this fall in scoring with 75 points (4th NE10), leading the NE10 with a 59.5-yard average on kickoffs and 20 touchbacks. He converted a school-record 13 field goals this season to lead the NE10 and rank 13th nationally in Division II, leading the Conference (32nd nationally) for field goal percentage (76-percent), while his 36 PATs are the second-highest single-season total in program history, one shy of the record. Haite capped his career as the program's all-time leading scorer with 244 points, finishing with school records for career PATs (118) and made field goals (42). He ranks second in program history for career field goal percentage (71.2%) and PAT% (92.9%).
Haite is also active in the community, volunteering his time in his hometown with the Kingston Police Department "Night Out" program, Kingston Recreational Summer Camp, NFL Flag football program and the Silver Lake Youth Basketball Association. He was a volunteer assistant at Boston Higasi School for Autism, cooked and served food at Major John Branford Homestead for the Jones River Historical Society and volunteered at Angelo Elementary School in Brockton and the Stonehill Farm.
Ivey, a CoSIDA Academic All-America first team selection this fall, earns NE10 Academic All-Conference honors for the first time, having recorded a 3.92 cumulative grade point average as an economics major and mathematics minor at Stonehill. The football program's third Academic All-American® and just the third at the College all-time to earn first team honors, also earned Academic All-District® first team honors this fall. Ivey has received the Division II ADA Academic Achievement Award for having a cumulative grade point average above 3.50 and been named to the NE10 Academic Honor Roll all five semesters to date, receiving Academic Excellence status for having a 4.0 semester GPA last spring. He is a four-time Athletic Director's Honor Roll member and been inducted into Omicron Delta Epsilon international honor society in economics. Ivey, a three-year letterwinner for Stonehill, finished his first season as Stonehill's starting right tackle, starting all ten games. He is a member of a line that has blocked for the top-ranked offense in the NE10, leading the Conference in total offense (415.8 yards per game) and third down offense (47.1-percent) – which ranks 21st nationally in Division II, ranking second for rushing offense (193.7 yds/gm), team pass efficiency (141.04) and fewest sacks allowed (1.60/gm) and fourth for passing offense (222.1 yds/gm).
Ivey and his offensive line teammates paved the way for Stonehill's All-America sophomore running back Justin Felder, the program's first Harlon Hill Trophy candidate, who enjoyed a record-breaking season. Felder set program records for rushing yards (1,513), touchdowns (16), total touchdowns (18), scoring (108 points) and all-purpose yards (1,611), leading the NE10 in each category and ranking fourth in Division II for rushing yards per game, fifth for rushing yards, ninth for rushing and total touchdowns, 12th in points scored and 13th in all-purpose.
Dunlavy, earning an impressive cumulative 3.98 GPA, while earning a 4.0 GPA in six of the seven semesters, completed her undergraduate career in December majoring in economics and minoring in data science and business administration. This is her second NE10 Academic All-Conference honor. She has been named to the NE10 Academic Honor Roll, Athletic Director's Honor Roll, and Stonehill's Dean List her entire career thus far. She has been invited to Stonehill Athletics' Academic Excellenve Breakfast for the highest GPA on the team after Fall 2017 and 2018 semesters. She has earned the Division II Athletic Director's Association Academic Achievement Award her sophomore and junior years. She was inducted into the Omicron Delta Epsilon honor society and was given the St. Thomas Aquinas medal, Patron Saint of Students, for having the highest cumulative grade point average on the team. She received her third Fred C. Petti Individual Academic Award in as many years this fall, for having the highest GPA among Stonehill student-athletes. In early December, Dunlavy received Stonehill's first Elite 24 Award, presented by the NE10 for having the highest GPA at each of the final sites of the NE10 Championships. The Brighton, Michigan native is just the second volleyball student-athlete to earn Academic All-District I First Team honors, as Pam Kelly '98, was the first honoree. This is her second recognition from the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) as she earned it last year as a junior.
On the court, Dunlavy started and appeared in all 27 matches this season as she averaged 4.52 digs per set ranking seventh in the Conference. This season, Dunlavy reached the 1,000 career-dig milestone in a 3-0 victory over Saint Michael's College and she is now the 10th Skyhawk to reach this mark. As she wrapped up her career helping the team to its second NE10 Tournament appearance in four years, she totaled 1,181 digs and sits seventh in program history. Her 4.52 digs per average is the highest average in a season for a libero since Erin Kelly '13 averaged 4.50 in 2012. In the classroom, Dunlavy was a teacher's assistant at Harvard University for the economics department specifically assisting in micro and macroeconomics, serving in the same capacity at Stonehill since the fall of 2017. This past summer, she was an intern at Meridian Health Plan in enterprise information department in Detroit, Michigan. Dunlavy completed her undergraduate career this December.
Lastra, with her 3.85 grade point average in the classroom and 4.0 GPA this fall semester, as she studies health science, collects her sixth Academic All-Conference honor. The senior posted three top-20 finishes in five meets this season, including a seventh-place finish at the NCAA Division II East Region Cross Country Championships, as she earned her third cross country All-East Region Team award. The Bridgton, Maine native earned her fourth cross country NE10 All-Conference honor as she was tabbed on the third team, with a 19th-place finish. She also went on to compete in her fourth NCAA Division II Cross Country Championships. She assisted the team to the program's 18th NE10 Championship, 16th NCAA East Regional Championship, and 20th-straight appearance at the NCAA Championship. Last week, she earned her fourth cross country USTFCCCA All-Academic Award, assisting the team to the Team Academic Award. She also earned two Division II ADA Academic Achievement Awards.
Curtin, who is a philosophy major and economics minor, has culminated a 3.79 GPA, while competing all three seasons. Last summer, she was selected to Stonehill Undergraduate Research Experience (SURE) program last summer The junior posted two top-five finishes this season out of five meets, including a career best finish at the NCAA Division II East Region Cross Country Championships. The Plymouth, Massachusetts native was named USTFCCCA East Region Athlete of the Year following a first-place finish at the Regionals. With the individual title, Curtin earned her third USTFCCCA All-East Region honor. Prior to the meet, she placed third at the NE10 Championship for her third cross country NE10 All-Conference honor. Curtin competed in her second NCAA Division II Championship and finished a career-best 116th. The Plymouth, Massachusetts native has seen her name on the Dean's list, the NE10 Academic Honor Roll, and the Athletic Director's Honor Roll six times as she earns her second NE10 Academic All-Conference award.
McNamee, who has averaged a 3.72 GPA through his fall semester of his sophomore year, saw five top-30 finishes in seven meets this season. The Plymouth, Massachusetts native is earning his first NE10 Academic All-Conference honor. This season, he picked up his second NE10 All-Conference third team honor for cross country with a 20th-place finish, a career best mark. He then crossed the finish line eighth at the East Regional Championship for his second USTFCCCA All-East Region team honor in cross country, followed by his second-career appearance at the NCAA Cross Country Championships. The sophomore has been named the NE10 Academic and Athletic Director's Honor Rolls.
A senior goalkeeper on the women's soccer team, Brown is studying health science and has combined for a cumulative 3.61 GPA. Over her four years on the team, Brown has started and appeared in 56 games averaging 1.17 goals against average, 274 saves, .806 saves percentage, a 31-20-4 record and 14 shutouts. This season, Brown totaled four shutouts (fourth in the Conference), totaled 93 saves (sixth in the Conference), .816 save percentage (fourth in the Conference), and 0.95 goals against average (second in the Conference). This is the second time in her career that she has been named to the NE10 Academic All-Conference team. Brown was named to the NE10 All-Conference third team for her second honor in her career, followed by a NEWISA All-New England second team recognition, her second award from the association in her career. The senior assisted the Skyhawks to its third NCAA Tournament appearance in four years and first-career NCAA Tournament win. The Skyhawks also appeared in its fourth NE10 Tournament in four years.
Rosano, who has averaged a 3.66 GPA as she majors in accounting with a minor in criminology, earned her first-career NE10 Academic All-Conference recognition. The senior left back, also earned her first-career CoSIDA Academic All-District I first team honor. She is the first women's soccer player to be named to the All-District team since 2011 and seventh name added to the list. The Cohasset, Massachusetts native started and appeared in all 21 games this season as she brings her career total to 65 games played in starting in every game since her sophomore year. She has been named to the NE10 Academic Honor Roll with Academic Distinction and the Athletic Director's Honor Roll. She has been named to the Dean's List six semesters to date and last year as a junior she earned the Division II Athletic Director's Association Academic Achievement Award. She was a key member of the Skyhawks' defensive line that averaged 0.95 goals against this year with 19 goals allowed. In her four years, this is the second best average, as 2016 the team combined for 0.85 goals against average and 19 goals allowed.
Men's soccer senior defensive back, Pereira holds a 3.82 cumulative GPA in accounting, as he earns his first NE10 Academic All-Conference accolade. The senior scored his first-career goal and assist this season. He scored the game-winning goal in a 2-1 victory over Bentley University for his first collegiate goal, while he registered an assist in a 2-1 victory over Saint Anselm College. The Norton, Massachusetts native has received the Division II ADA Academic Achievement Award, while also being named to the NE10 Academic Honor Roll and Athletic Director's Honor Roll. He assisted the team to 2.03 goals against as the Skyhawks fell to nine opponents by one goal out of the 17 games played.
Woerner earns NE10 Academic All-Conference honors for the first time in her career, having earned a 3.60 cumulative grade point average as a chemistry major enrolled in the Moreau Honors program at Stonehill. The Division II Athletic Director's Association (ADA) Academic Achievement Award recipient has been named to the NE10 Academic Honor Roll all five semesters to date and Athletic Director's Honor Roll four semesters. Woerner received the RC Award for first-year chemistry students and selected to Stonehill Undergraduate Research Experience (SURE) program last summer. Woerner worked with a team under Pam Lombardi, Assistant Professor of Chemistry, on various chiral ligand projects. Woerner investigated triamines then synthesize an iron and an aluminum complex and will characterize the complexes to determine overall structure. Her project, Investigation of a New Class of Chiral Triamine Ligand, examined the catalytic properties of the ligands to determine reactivity, structure and selectivity.
Woerner started all 17 games for Stonehill this fall and was a key member of a Skyhawks defensive unit that ranked fourth in the NE10 and ninth nationally with a 1.19 team goals against average, yielding 9.5 shots, including 5.2 on goal, and 5.5 penalty corners per game with six shutouts. She has started 46 of the 48 games she has played over her career at Stonehill and earned All-Tournament honors for the 2017 NE10 Tournament.
With 23 intercollegiate sports after the announcement of the addition of women's swimming (starting in the fall of 2020) and women's ice hockey (starting in 2021-22), Stonehill boasts one of the top athletic and academic programs in the country. Stonehill has won the Northeast-10 Conference Presidents' Cup five times, all coming within the last 14 years. The Skyhawks have received the NCAA Division II Presidents' Award for Academic Achievement each of the first nine years of the program's existence of honoring institutions with an Academic Success Rate (ASR) of 90-percent or better. Stonehill has earned a 95% Academic Success Ranking (ASR) by the NCAA, which considers the academic success rate of the institution based on the graduation rate of student-athletes, good for tenth among all NCAA Division II institutions, with nine Skyhawk teams receiving a perfect rating of 100%. Stonehill won five NE10 Championships during the 2018-19 academic year, with nine programs earning NCAA Division II Championship bids and the equestrian program capturing its tenth Intercollegiate Horse Show Association (IHSA) Zone 1, Region 4 championship.
