Stay clinches match win in battle with Markaryan at No. 4 singles

WALPOLE, Mass. (March 28, 2021) – Adelphi University, ranked No. 4 in this week's Oracle/Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Division II East Regional rankings, posted a 4-1 victory over Stonehill College, ranked No. 8 in the region, in Northeast-10 Conference women's tennis action at the Wimbledon 109 Tennis Club this afternoon. 

Highlights

  • Postgrad Nicole Stay, junior Barbie Quagliardi and sophomore Amanda Franstedt were all double-winners to lead Adelphi to its second-straight win.
  • Stonehill picked up a doubles win and collected a point with sophomore Lily Peter winning by default at No. 6 singles.

How it Happened

  • Quagliardi and senior Nicole Kielan clinched the doubles point for Adelphi with their 6-2 win at No. 1 doubles. Franstedt and Stay claimed a 6-1 win at No. 2 doubles for the Panthers.
  • Franstedt posted Adelphi's first singles point with her 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 3 against Stonehill senior Isabelle Porter.
  • Stay provided the match-clinching point, edging Stonehill junior Emma Markaryan 6-4, 6-4 at No. 4 singles.
  • Quagliardi earned a singles point for Stonehill with her 6-4, 6-0 win at No. 2 against Stonehill sophomore Steffi Antao.

Noteworthy

  • Quagliardi is ranked No. 4 in the most recent Oracle/ITA Division II East Region singles rankings.
  • Quagliardi and Kielan are the No. 2-ranked doubles team in the region, ranked No. 18 in the Oracle/ITA Division II national rankings, while Franstedt and Stay are ranked No. 10 in the region.
  • Stonehill sophomore Cristina Solorzano Valencia is ranked No. 6 in the Oracle/ITA Division II East Region Singles Rankings. She had bounced back from dropping the first set against Kielan, ranked No. 15 in the region, to force a third, winning the second set 6-3, when the match ended.

Up Next

Stonehill (2-2, 2-2 NE10) is off until Wednesday, April 7, when it is scheduled to visit Southern New Hampshire University, ranked No. 3 in the East Region, at 3 p.m. Spectators will not be permitted to attend by the NE10 COVID-19 attendance policies. The Skyhawks next home match is slated for Sunday, April 11, when they host Saint Anselm College at noon.

Adelphi (3-1, 3-1 NE10) hosts Le Moyne College next Sunday at 1 p.m.
