Aguilo leads Ravens to victory over two-time defending NE10 Champions

RINDGE, N.H. (March 17, 2021) – Franklin Pierce University, fresh off its first Northeast-10 Conference Tournament appearance during the 2019 fall season, showed its potential to make strides beyond that this spring, with a 4-0 triumph over two-time defending champions Stonehill College, in NE10 women's tennis action this afternoon.

  • Freshman Maria Penalver Aguilo led three double-winners for Franklin Pierce with victories at No. 1 singles and No. 2 doubles, along with sophomore Laura Alvarez Tello. Postgrad Himani Mor and sophomore Liria Loria also claimed a pair of wins for the match.
  • Franklin Pierce's third doubles pairing of postgrad Estela Carra and freshman Zoe Asterio Correa also picked up a win for the Ravens, providing the win at No. 3 doubles that clinched the doubles point.

How it Happened

  • Carra and Asterio Correa clinched the doubles point for Franklin Pierce with their 6-2 decision over Stonehill senior Isabelle Porter and junior Emma Markaryan at No. 3
  • Aguilo clinched the match win for Franklin Pierce with her 6-2, 6-2 win over Stonehill's regionally-ranked sophomore Cristina Solorzano Valencia at No. 1 singles.
  • Regionally-ranked Loria won Franklin Pierce's first singles point at No. 4, while Mor followed with a win at No. 2 that drew the Ravens on the cusp of victory.
  • Markaryan was in the midst of a rally at No. 3 singles for Stonehill, leading the second set 4-1, after dropping the first set to Alvarez Tello, 7-5, when the match was halted.

  • Franklin Pierce notched its first win over Stonehill since joining the NE10 in 2000.
  • Stonehill's Solarzano Valencia is ranked No. 6 in the most recent Oracle/ITA Division II East Regional Rankings.
  • Franklin Pierce's Loria is ranked No. 15 in the most recent Division II East Regional rankings, while she and Mor are ranked No. 8 in the doubles rankings.
