Women's Tennis Returns with Win Over AIC, 7-0

Antao provides two clinching points to lead Skyhawks to season-opening win

EASTON, Mass. (March 14, 2021) – The defending Northeast-10 Conference Champion Stonehill College women's tennis program returned to action for the first time in over 500 days with a season-opening 7-0 triumph over American International College in NE10 women's tennis action inside the Sally Blair Ames Sports Complex today. 

Highlights

  • Sophomore Steffi Antao led three double-winners for Stonehill on the courts, providing clinching points in both singles and doubles.
  • Sophomores Cristina Solorzano Valencia and Lily Peter also picked up singles and doubles wins on the courts for Stonehill.
  • Junior Emma Markaryan chipped in with a win for Stonehill at No. 3 singles.

How it Happened

  • Antao and Peter teamed up for a 6-0 win at No. 2 doubles to clinch the doubles point for Stonehill with one default point at No. 3.
  • Antao clinched the match win with her 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 2 singles against AIC junior Sophie Roberge.
  • Stonehill also picked up points at No. 5 and No. 6 singles by default.

Noteworthy

  • It marks the first career win for head coach Lynne Smith, who took the reigns as head coach in February, 2020, just prior to the COVID-19 shutdown.
  • Stonehill returned to match play 502 days since its 5-1 win over Le Moyne College in the 2019 NE10 Championship match on October 27, 2019.
  • Today's match was Stonehill's first home contest since the women's basketball program won the NE10 Championship against Saint Anselm on March 8, 2020 – 371 days ago.
  • Peter made her doubles debut for the Skyhawks, with Antao, playing one singles match as a freshman in 2019. She is now 2-0 in singles play over her career with the 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 4 today over AIC junior Melissa Feilen.
  • Solarzano Valencia is ranked No. 6 in the most recent Oracle/Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Division II East Region rankings. She teamed up with junior Samantha Ormesher for a 6-2 decision at No. 1 doubles, before adding a 6-1, 6-0 win at No. 1 singles against AIC senior Maritxell Jimeno-Vicente.

Stonehill (1-0, 1-0 NE10) is scheduled to return to action on Wednesday, when it visits Franklin Pierce University for an NE10 match at 2:30 p.m. The Skyhawks next scheduled home match is next Sunday, March 21, when it hosts Saint Michael's College at noon. American International (0-1, 0-1 NE10) hosts Le Moyne College on Wednesday.
