Young's 14 saves and late caused turnover fuels Hawks win


McCarthy netted the first two goals of her collegiate career to help spark the comeback effort for Stonehill

EASTON, Mass. (April 10, 2021) – Saint Anselm College, ranked No. 21 in this week's Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA) Division II poll, turned back a late comeback effort from Stonehill College to record a 10-9 triumph in Northeast-10 Conference women's lacrosse action on Timothy J. Coughlin, '80 Memorial Field at W.B. Mason Stadium this afternoon.

How it Happened

  • Saint Anselm held a three-goal lead on six occasions, including a four-goal cushion (8-4) after junior Jenna Balboni's third goal of the day with 17:50 to play, but needed to hold off a late Stonehill rally to secure the win and remain unbeaten.
  • Stonehill trailed by three (10-7) after sophomore Lexi Palmisano netted her fourth of the day with 8:14 left.
  • Junior Emma Sullivan drew Stonehill back within two, assisted by classmate Kendall Fressle, with her second goal of the afternoon with seven minutes on the clock.
  • Senior Shannon Hughes pulled Stonehill within a goal for the first time since the opening five minutes of the second half, with her second of the day with 3:52 still to play.
  • Stonehill had the final possession of the game, but Saint Anselm junior goalkeeper Grace Young intercepted a pass with three-seconds to play to seal the win, having already recorded an earlier caused turnover to go with her 14 saves.
  • Sullivan opened the scoring in the contest, off a feed from sophomore Lydia Rudden, 59-seconds into the contest, but Saint Anselm followed with the next four goals, including two from Balboni, to grab its first three goal lead (4-1) less than 11-minutes into the game.
  • Stonehill closed within two (5-3) at the half and then freshman Liv McCarthy closed within a goal (5-4) with her second marker of the day 4:27 into the second half.
  • Saint Anselm followed with a three-goal run, including two by Palmisano, to stretch its lead to a game-high four goals (8-4) with 17:15 remaining.

  • Palmisano led three goal-scorers for Saint Anselm with four, adding five draw controls, two ground balls and two caused turnovers.
  • Senior Kelsey Czarnota and Balboni each contributed three goals and an assist for four-point days. Czarnota added four draws, two ground balls and two caused turnovers.
  • McCarthy was among three two-goal scorers for Stonehill, netting the first two goals of her collegiate career.
  • Sullivan and Hughes each added a pair of markers. Hughes had three ground balls, while Sullivan collected three draw controls and four ground balls.
  • Rudden dished out two assists, while Fressle chipped in a goal and assist.
  • Senior Kaleigh Wright made her second-straight start of the week and posted a second consecutive double-digit save effort with 13 stops this afternoon.

Stonehill (2-4, 2-4 NE10) is scheduled to return to action on Tuesday, when it hosts Saint Michael's College for an NE10 matchup here at W.B.
