Second-half run pushes Falcons past upset-minded Skyhawks

EASTON, Mass. (April 7, 2021) – Bentley University, ranked No. 14 in this week's Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA) Division II poll, used a 6-1 run midway through the second half to fuel an 11-9 triumph over Stonehill College in Northeast-10 Conference women's lacrosse action on Timothy J. Coughlin, '80 Memorial Field at W.B. Mason Stadium this afternoon.

How it Happened

  • Bentley used a 6-1 run over the middle third of the second half to turn a two goal deficit (5-3), after Stonehill sophomore Katie Julien scored her first of two second half goals 27-seconds into the half, into a three goal lead (9-6) with 12:37 remaining.
  • Bentley junior Glenna Gies bookended the run with her two goals on the afternoon, sparking the run with her first with 20:06 left in regulation and then providing the three-goal cushion with a second with 12:37 left.
  • Freshman Caroline Affolter also scored two goals during the decisive run, while senior Julia Glavin added a goal and assist.
  • Affolter's second of back-to-back goals pushed Bentley in front (6-5) with 19:25 to play, before Stonehill junior Corinne Lewis equalized with 16:53 left.
  • Senior Cara McCarthy put the Falcons in front for good (7-6) with her second goal of the day with 15:17 remaining.
  • Stonehill made another late rally with goals from senior Olivia Pino and Julien 42-second apart to draw within a goal (9-8) with 7:44 still to play.
  • Bentley sealed the win with markers by junior Caroline Boudreau and Glavin, sandwiching Stonehill senior Shannon Hughes' fifth goal of the game, in the final 5:38.
  • Hughes scored all four Stonehill goals in the first half to take a 4-3 lead into the intermission, including two-straight 1:28 apart to give the Skyhawks a two-goal cushion (4-2) with 9:12 to play in the frame.

Noteworthy

  • Hughes finished with a career-high matching five goals on the afternoon, surpassing the 100-point mark for her career. She has now totaled 85 goals and 41 assists in 42 career games for 101 points.
  • Senior Kaleigh Wright made her second start of the season (and career) in goal for Stonehill and kept the Skyhawks in the game with a career-high 20 saves. She held Bentley to 1-for-13 shooting on free-position shots, including 0-for-7 in the second half, and chipped in with three ground balls.
  • Julien was the only other Stonehill player with multiple goals with a career-high matching two, while sophomore Lydia Rudden dished out two assists.
  • Glavin's three goals led a quintet of Bentley scorers with multiple goals to provide the Falcons scoring. She also dished out an assist and collected five draw controls and a caused turnover.
  • Geis and McCarthy each added two goals and an assist for the Falcons.
  • Postgrad Eliza Bresler recorded a double-figure save game of her own for Bentley, finishing with 11, adding three ground balls and a key late caused turnover.

Stonehill (2-3, 2-3 NE10) is slated to return to action on Saturday, when it hosts No. 21 Saint Anselm College at W.B. Mason Stadium at 11 a.m. Fans from off campus will not be permitted to attend the game in conjunction with the current Stonehill and NE10 spectator policy, but the game will be available via SkyhawksVision on NE10 NOW.
