Women's Golf Rebounds on Day Two of The Senior Showdown

Van Zanen finishes seventh after second round 78, a round matched by Kase

SOUTHWICK, Mass. (April 25, 2022) – The Stonehill College women's golf team wrapped up its 2021-22 season with a solid second round as it posted the second-lowest score of the day and its two seniors capped their collegiate careers with top ten finishes as play concluded at The Senior Showdown, hosted by Stonehill, on the 5,822-yard, par-72 layout at The Ranch Golf Club this afternoon.

Stonehill posted two rounds in the 70s and another three in the 80s in posting a second round team total of 323 which marked the second-lowest team score of the day and the third-lowest score of the weekend behind the two rounds of 301 and 306 by Franklin Pierce University, ranked No. 8 in the NCAA Division II East Regional rankings, to take the team title with a two day score of 607. The Skyhawks finished fourth overall with a two-day score of 670 (347-323), just four shots behind third place The College of Saint Rose (334-332=666), while Adelphi University finished second (325-330=655).

Adelphi sophomore Ilaria Ponziani followed up her three-under-par opening round 69 on Sunday, with a 75 today to clinch medalist honors with a two day even par score of 144. She finished two strokes in front of Saint Rose sophomore Erika Fuentes, who posted the low round of the day with a one-under-par 71 to finish at 146 (+2) over the two days. The two sophomores were joined on the All-Tournament team by the Franklin Pierce trio of freshmen Kesinee Prukmathakul (148) and Phisonlaya Ruayruen (150), junior Alia Godek (152) and American International College freshman Tia Marie Martinez (157).

Stonehill was led by top ten finishes from its two seniors, Sloane Van Zanen and Emma Beaulieu. Van Zanen was one of two Skyhawks to post team-low rounds of 78 on Monday, finishing with a two-day score of 159 (81-78) and a tie for seventh on the individual leaderboard, while Beaulieu placed tenth at 164 (83-81). Van Zanen carded two birdies on the front nine, posting identical nines of 39 on the front and back. She opened with a birdie on the 480-yard par-5 first hole and then bookended the front nine with a birdie on the 388-yard par-5 ninth. Van Zanen scored nine pars, including six on the back nine, and played the four par-5's at even par over the two days. She recorded her fifth round in the 70s of the year.

Beaulieu finished the tournament ranked second in the field with 21 pars, behind only Ponziani, and tied for second in par three scoring (even). She played the front nine in 40 strokes and carded a 41 on the back, posting pars on six of the final seven holes, including each of the last four holes of her round.

Junior Emily Kase matched Van Zanen for low round of the day, carding three birdies on the front nine on her way to a career-low matching 78 – her lowest round of the season. She finished with a two-day score of 170 (92-78), recording birdies on the first (4), second (3) and fourth (3) holes after starting her round on the 17th hole. Kase shot an even par 36 on the front nine, to go with a 42 on the back.

  • Sophomore Emma Casey and freshman Mollie Thomas rounded out Stonehill's rounds in the 80s on Monday. Thomas placed 16th overall with a two-day score of 177 (91-86), matching her season-low round for the fifth time, while Casey finished at 182 (97-85) to place 17th after recording her career-low round today.
  • Sophomore Hannah Pignato followed in 21st overall with a two-day score of 188 (94-94), notching a birdie on the 349-yard, par-4 seventh.

Stonehill wraps up its 2021-22 season today and the Skyhawks will begin their transition to NCAA Division I status starting on July 1, having accepted an invitation to the Northeast Conference (NEC) earlier this month.
