Women's Golf Wraps Up SMSU Spring Invite in Ninth

LITCHFIELD PARK, Ariz. (March 8, 2022) – The Stonehill College women's golf team wrapped up its trip to the Southwestern corner of the country with a ninth-place team finish at the SMSU Spring Invitational, hosted by Southwest Minnesota State University, as play concluded with the second round on the 5,702-yard, par 71 layout at the Wigwam Resort's Blue Course, today.

No. 40 nationally-ranked University of Colorado-Colorado Springs rallied from a 16-stroke deficit after the first round to take home the team title with a two-day score of 633 after posting a score of 309 today to go with an opening round 324 on Monday for a three-way tie for second. First round leaders University of Nebraska-Kearney, ranked No. 31 nationally, followed up their opening round 308 with a 327 team score today to slip two strokes behind in second at 635, while Missouri Western State University (324-315=639) took third. Western New Mexico University posted the second-lowest team score of the day with a 310 after scoring a 330 on Monday to finish fourth (640).

Stonehill held in ninth on Tuesday with a two-day score of 677, following up Monday's 338 with a 339 today. Missouri Western State's Allycia Gan took individual medalist honors with a two-day seven over par score of 149 (76-73), matching the low round of the day, along with Western New Mexico's Taysea Powell who charged 15 spots up the leaderboard to third (82-73=155), three strokes behind Northwest Missouri State University's Morgan Thiele (78-74=152) in second.

Stonehill recorded four players with rounds in the 80s on Tuesday, after recording three such rounds on Monday. The Skyhawks finished tied for fourth in the field with 11 birdies over the two rounds as a team, adding five today after carding six on Monday.

Senior co-captain Emma Beaulieu finished the tournament tied for third in the field with four birdies, adding two more today after scoring a pair on Monday. She posted the low round of the day for Stonehill today, carding an 82 after recording an 84 on Monday to finish tied for 25th out of 80 entries on the individual leaderboard with a two-day score of 166. Classmate and co-captain Sloane Van Zanen finished tied for 25th overall at 166, posting a round of 85 today after a team-low round of 81 on Monday. She, along with junior Julia Dapron, finished seventh in the field with three birdies apiece.

  • Beaulieu opened her day with a birdie on the par-5 first hole and later added a second on the par-3 15th for the second-straight day. She moved up six spots on the leaderboard with her round today, adding six pars.
  • Van Zanen chipped in a birdie on the par three 17th today after notching a pair of birdies, both also on par three's, on Monday.
  • Dapron joined Beaulieu in birdieing back-to-back holes this week, doing so on the 15th and par-4 16th today on her way to a second round 86 for a two-day score of 169 (40th) after shooting an 83 on Monday. Beaulieu birdied the 14th and 15th consecutively on Monday.
  • Freshman Mollie Thomas rounded out Stonehill's rounds in the 80s on Tuesday with a season-low matching 86 to finish with a two-day score of 181 (58th). She posted seven pars, including a string of three straight during the front nine.
  • Junior Emily Kase finished tied for 60th overall at 184, following up a 90 on Monday with a score of 94 today.
  • Sophomores Hannah Pignato and Emma Casey rounded out the Skyhawks competing this week as individuals. Pignato finished 62nd overall (94-91=185), while Casey finished tied for 72nd (100-95=195).

Stonehill is now off for a month, before returning to the course on Monday and Tuesday, April 18-19 for the Yellow Jacket Invitational, hosted by fellow Northeast-10 Conference member American International College, at Springfield Country Club. The Skyhawks will host a Spring Invitational on April 24-25 at The Ranch Golf Club in Southwick, Massachusetts.
