Van Zanen & Women's Golf Finishes Fifth at Pfeiffer Invitational

Skyhawks post fifth place team finish, while Phoenix, Arizona, senior caps tournament fifth on individual leaderboard

OCEAN ISLE BEACH, N.C. (March 1, 2022) – Stonehill College rounded out its first tournament of the spring season with a fifth place team finish at the Pfeiffer Invitational, hosted by Pfeiffer University, on the 5,653-yard, par-72 layout, at Lion's Paw Golf Links at Ocean Ridge Plantation today.

Senior Sloane Van Zanen led the way for Stonehill, completing the two-day event in a tie for fifth on the individual leaderboard, out of 58 entries, as she followed up her opening round 78 with an 83 today for a two-day score of 161 (+17). It marks the highest individual finish of her Stonehill career, having now registered five career top ten finishes.

Monika Vicario finished off medalist honors with a two-day score of four-over-par 148, following up her one-under-par 71 on Monday with a 77 today. She won the event by four strokes over Amani Narang of Sweet Briar College and Sofia Liden from Newberry College who both carded back-to-back 76's for a two-day score of 152.

Liden paced a Newberry squad that took the team title with identical rounds of 324 on Monday and Tuesday for a score of 648 to edge Mars Hill University (335-317=652) by four strokes as the Lions recorded the low team score of the tournament today. Stonehill followed up Monday's 340 team score with a 347 today for a final score of 687 for fifth place in the team standings. The Skyhawks were edged by fourth place Adrian College (344-333=677) by ten strokes, but finished ahead of sixth place Southern Virginia University (348-345=693).

  • Van Zanen followed up a first round in which she recorded 12 pars, including a string of ten in a row at one point, with ten more today. She recovered from an up and down start to her first five holes, that included a birdie on the par three third hole, with a string of five straight pars. Van Zanen completed her round with a five over par back nine, featuring six pars.
  • Van Zanen finished the week ranked second in the tournament behind Vicario with 22 pars and seventh in par three scoring (3.38) and fifth in par four scoring (4.50).
  • Junior Julia Dapron finished tied for 18th in the field, carding Stonehill's second-lowest round of the day by following up her opening round 86 with an 85 (171). She posted a birdie on the par five 13th hole and played the back nine in five over par.
  • Junior Emily Kase posted Stonehill's third round in the 80s today, carding an 88 after shooting 97 on Monday to finished tied for 33rd (185).
  • Senior Emma Beaulieu finished 24th with a two-day score of 175 (84-91), while freshman Mollie Thomas carded two birdies on her way to a 91 today for a two-day score of 183 (92-91) to finish tied for 29th.
  • Sophomores Hannah Pignato and Emma Casey both competed as individuals and placed tied for 33rd and 38th, respectively. Pignato posted a two-day score of 185 (92-93), while Casey finished at 191 (94-97).

Up Next

Stonehill returns to action next week, when it competes at the Southwest Minnesota State University Spring Invitational at Wigwam Resort in Litchfield Park, Arizona, next Monday and Tuesday, March 7-8. The Skyhawks return to the event for the second time in their program's history, having posted a seventh-place team finish in 2019.
