Raymond Lifts Women's Basketball Past Saint Anselm, 61-59

EASTON, Mass. (February 5, 2022) – Senior forward Kayla Raymond scored a tip-in off an inbounds lob pass with 0.9-seconds to play to lift Stonehill College to a 61-59 victory over Saint Anselm College in Northeast-10 Conference women's basketball action on Paula Sullivan Court at Merkert Gymnasium this afternoon.

Raymond's buzzer-bearer capped a season-high matching 26-point outing that included the 1,000th point of her collegiate career. She became the 33rd in program history to eclipse the 1,000-point plateau with her layup with 1:36 to remaining in the fourth quarter and finished the game with 1,005 points in 60 career games played over three seasons.

How it Happened

    Stonehill battled back from a double-digit deficit in the first half to secure its third-straight win and fifth over the last six games overall.
  • Saint Anselm took advantage of a nearly seven-minute Stonehill scoring drought with a 12-0 run to open an eight-point lead (12-4) after three-straight three-pointers from Steinman (2) and sophomore Alex Quirolo midway through the opening quarter.
  • Steinman sent Saint Anselm into the second frame with a nine-point cushion (15-6) by draining her third triple of the quarter.
  • Sophomore Gabby Turco stretched Saint Anselm's lead to a game-high 12 (18-6) 30-seconds into the second.
  • Trailing by ten (27-17) with 3:21 remaining in the half, Stonehill used a 10-2 run to close the gap to a pair (29-27) after a Raymond three-pointer with 55-seconds to play in the second quarter.
  • Saint Anselm carried a four-point lead into halftime (31-27) and then extended the advantage to six early in the third quarter.
  • Stonehill scored the final five points of the third, including four by Glidden, to close within a point (45-44) heading into the final frame.
  • Glidden pushed Stonehill back in front (46-45) for the first time since the opening minutes of the game with a layup 20-seconds into the fourth and then Bramanti extended the Skyhawks lead to four (49-45) with a free-throw a minute later.
  • Saint Anselm answered with five straight to reclaim the lead (50-49) when Steinman split two free-throws with 4:56 to play.
  • The teams traded baskets until Raymond scored a layup with 2:07 to play that pushed Stonehill back in front (55-54) and then her 1,000 and 1,001st career points extended the Skyhawks advantage to three (57-54) with 1:36 to play.
  • Steinman answered with a layup at the other end, but Raymond restored the Skyhawks three-point lead with 52-seconds on the clock.
  • Ouellette pulled Saint Anselm level with a three-pointer with 40-seconds to play.
  • Raymond's heroics came after a pair of offensive rebounds for Stonehill as Bramanti found her with lob off the inbounds pass with 0.9-seconds left on the baseline for a tip-in over a pack of players under the basket as time expired.

Noteworthy

  • Raymond scored ten of her 17 second half points in the fourth quarter and finished with her fourth 20-point game of the season (18th career), marking her 12th double-figure scoring output of the season (50th career) in 13 games and seventh-straight.
  • Santoro scored in double-figures for the fourth time over the last six games and seventh time this season overall (18th career).
  • Glidden scored in double-figures for the fifth time this season (sixth career).
  • Bramanti posted her 11th double-figure game of the season (24th career).
  • Stonehill is 26-10 over Raymond's career when she is its leading scorer.
  • Stonehill has won three-straight for the first time this season, posting five wins over the last six contests and six of eight since December 15.
  • Today's game continues a February stretch for Stonehill that will see it play nine games over the final three weeks of the regular season. The Skyhawks are not scheduled to have more than three days off (just twice) between games over the next 15 days.
