Staley Named NE-10 Field Athlete of the Week

Medway, Mass., junior All-American honored for fourth time over his career

EASTON, Mass. (February 18, 2014) – Stonehill College junior All-American Nick Staley (Medway, Mass./BC High) has been named the Northeast-10 Conference Field Athlete of the Week by the league office.

Staley, who earned indoor All-America honors for the high jump as a sophomore, earns the weekly honor for the first time this season (fourth career) after leading Stonehill's efforts at the Tufts University Cupid Challenge on Saturday. He won the high jump for the first time this season and improved his provisional qualification position for next month's NCAA Division II Indoor Track & Field Championships in Winston-Salem, N.C., with a season-best height of 6-feet, 10.75-inches. Staley is now tied for ninth nationally for the event, having qualified for indoor nationals as a sophomore when he placed fifth overall, to go with a pair of outdoor qualifications.

Staley, who was part of an NE-10 Relay of the Week recognition with the 4x400-meter relay team on December 11, has competed in five events during his junior season. His previous season-best in the high jump came with a height of 6-8.75 at the season-opening UMass Boston Indoor Open back on December 7 to originally provisionally qualify for nationals.

Staley placed fifth at the 2013 NCAA Indoor Championships with a leap of 6-10.75 to earn All-America honors for the first time in his career. He also captured both the indoor and outdoor New England Championships for the high jump his sophomore year, clearing a career-best height of 7-00.25 at the indoor championship and is a four-time U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) Division II All-East Region performer (indoor and outdoor combined). He is a three time All-Northeast-10 Conference and four-time All-New England performer over his career.

Stonehill, ranked second in the most recent USTFCCCA Division II East Regional computer rankings, is back in action on Saturday night when it looks to defend its NE-10 Indoor Championship at the Reggie Lewis Track & Athletic Center at 4 p.m.
