Skyhawks relay is third of the season to be honored after strong run at URI

EASTON, Mass. (February 5, 2014) – The Stonehill College men's 4000-meter distance medley relay team was named the Northeast-10 Conference relay of the week for men's track and field by the league office for the first time this season.

The men's distance medley relay is the third Stonehill team to receive Relay of the Week recognition from the NE-10 after the 4x400 earned the honors on December 13 and the 4x800 was honored on January 21. Stonehill's DMR turned in a third place finish at Saturday's Coaches' Tribute meet, hosted by the University of Rhode Island, against entirely Division I competition with a season-best time of 10:29.16. Sophomore Nick Kirkpatrick (Carmel, Ind./Brebeuf Jesuit Prep) ran the opening 1200-meter leg in 3:12.3, before handing off to junior All-American Patrick Cooney (Douglaston, N.Y./Archbishop Molloy) who completed the 400-meter leg in 53.2-seconds, with junior All-American Daniel Zawalich (Paxton, Mass./St. John's of Shrewsbury) running the 800-meter leg in 1:58.4 and then senior All-American Justin Blaszczyk (Saint James, N.Y./Smithtown) came home with a time of 4:25.1 in the one mile anchor.

Cooney, Zawalich and Blaszczyk were all members of Stonehill's distance medley relay team that earned All-America honors at the 2012 NCAA Division II Indoor Championships in Mankato, Minn., with a sixth place finish in 10:04.69. Blaszczyk, Cooney and Kirkpatrick were also part of the Stonehill 4x800-relay that earned NE-10 Relay of the Week honors on January 21 after a second place finish at URI's Sorlien Invitational in 8:07.20. Blaszczyk and Kirkpatrick have been part of three NE-10 Relay of the Week teams since the award started prior to last season, while Cooney and Zawalich earn the recognition for the second time.

The Stonehill men's track and field team, ranked third in this week's U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) Division II East Regional computer rankings, is back in action on Saturday when it competes at the David Hemery Valentine Invitational, hosted by Boston University, at the BU Track & Tennis Center, starting at 9 a.m.
