Leonard Leads Stonehill at New England Championships


Senior Stephen Leonard posted his third career All-New England performance with his eighth place finish in the 10,000-meter run today.

Chatham, N.J., senior posts second-straight All-New England finish in 10,000m 

WESTFIELD, Mass. (May 9, 2014) – Senior Stephen Leonard (Chatham, New Jersey/Chatham) posted his third career All-New England performance to lead the Stonehill College men's track & field program on day two of the 2014 New England Outdoor Track & Field Championships, hosted by Westfield State University, at Alumni Field today.

Leonard, who has now collected All-New England honors for the 10,000-meter run for the second straight year to go with an indoor All-New England performance in the 5000-meter run in February, placed eighth in the field of 21 runners today with a time of 32:03.55.

Senior Xavier Dixon (New Bedford, Massachusetts/New Bedford) qualified third overall out of 34 entries for the 110-meter high hurdles, winning his preliminary heat in 14.43-seconds. He will run in tomorrow's final scheduled for 1:50 p.m.


Senior Taylor Viotto posted a ninth place finish in the javelin today.

Senior Taylor Viotto (Washington, New Jersey/Warren Hills) placed ninth in the javelin throw to just miss All-New England status (top eight) with his distance of 181-feet, 7-inches. He currently ranks 41st nationally with his personal-best throw of 190-07 at the Colonial Relays last month.

Senior Trent Fontanella (Pelham, New Hampshire/Bishop Guertin) finished 14th out of 28 entries in the 5000-meter run with his season-best time of 14:58.65.

Junior Teague Grubel (Phoenix, Arizona/Shadow Mountain) placed 15th out of 29 competitors in the 200-meter dash prelims with a time of 22.36-seconds. The top eight in today's preliminary heats all advance to tomorrow's event finals. Freshman All-American Matt Baldasare (Mansfield, Massachusetts/Mansfield) placed 17th out of 32 entries in the 400-meter dash prelims with a time of 49.91-seconds, while junior Robert Smith (Woburn, Massachusetts/Woburn Memorial) finished 24th in 50.54-seconds. Senior Tyler Moules (Billerica, Massachusetts/Billerica) finished 19th out of 29 entries in the 400-meter intermediate hurdles prelims in 56.09-seconds.

Stonehill will be back in action for the final day of the New England Championships here at Alumni Field tomorrow. The Skyhawks scheduled events tomorrow open with the 3000-meter steeplechase at noon.
