Baldasare and Grubel lead list of 16 Skyhawks recognized in 25 events with three All-Region performances each

EASTON, Mass. (May 15, 2014) – A program-record matching 16 members of the Stonehill College men's track and field program have earned a combined program-best 25 All-East Region honors by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA), the organization announced this week. The awards recognize each of the region's top five performers in individual events and top three teams in relay events.

Stonehill's 16 All-Region performers matches the program record set during the 2012 outdoor season, while its 25 total awards earned by those individuals betters the previous high of 20 set during the 2012 outdoor season and matched during the indoor campaign this past winter. The USTFCCCA started its All-Region program in 2010-11 and the Skyhawks have had a combined 55 student-athletes earn 71 All-Region awards since.

Junior Teague Grubel (Phoenix, Arizona/Shadow Mountain) and freshman All-American Matt Baldasare (Mansfield, Massachusetts/Mansfield) lead the way for Stonehill by collecting three All-East Region awards apiece. Grubel, who is now a six-time All-Region performer with five outdoor honors over his career, collected All-Region status for his personal-best time of 10.93-seconds in the 100-meter dash at the Holy Cross Invitational on April 19 to go with honors as part of Stonehill's 4x100-meter and 4x400-meter relay teams. The 4x100-meter relay posted a season-best time of 42.16-seconds in placing sixth at the New England Outdoor Track & Field Championships last weekend, while the 4x400-meter relay posted a school-record time of 3:15.22 for an eighth place showing at the New England Championships.

Baldasare, who earned All-America honors as part of Stonehill's 4000-meter distance medley relay which was also among two indoor All-East Region awards for the Skyhawk rookie this winter, was also part of Stonehill's 4x100 and 4x400-meter relays and also collects All-Region honors for the 400-meter dash with his season-best time of 48.67-seconds to finish second and earn All-Northeast-10 honors at the NE-10 Championships two weeks ago.

Seniors Xavier Dixon (New Bedford, Massachusetts/New Bedford), who will represent Stonehill at the NCAA Division II Outdoor Track & Field Championships in Allendale, Michigan, in next weekend, and Tyler Moules (Billerica, Massachusetts/Billerica) as well as  juniors Daniel Cormier (Methuen, Massachusetts/Methuen), Robert Smith (Woburn, Massachusetts/Woburn Memorial) and All-American Daniel Zawalich (Paxton, Massachusetts/St. John's of Shrewsbury) have all earned All-East Region honors in two events. Rounding out the Skyhawks All-Region performers are seniors Trent Fontanella (Pelham, New Hampshire/Bishop Guertin), Stephen Leonard (Chatham, New Jersey/Chatham), Ryan Perkins (Shrewsbury, Massachusetts/St. John's of Shrewsbury), Taylor Viotto (Washington, New Jersey/Warren Hills), Nathaniel Webber (Atkinson, New Hampshire/Central Catholic) and Alex Willgoos (Newington, Connecticut/Newington), junior All-Americans Patrick Cooney (Douglaston, New York/Archbishop Molloy) and Nick Staley (Medway, Massachusetts/BC High) and classmate Bryan Wilcox (Plantsville, Connecticut/Southington).

In addition to Grubel and Baldasare earning All-Region honors with Stonehill's 4x100-meter relay are Dixon and Smith, while Grubel, Baldasare, Smith and Moules were all part of the Skyhawks' 4x400-meter relay. Cormier (shot put and hammer throw) and Zawalich (800 and 1500) are the only two student-athletes to collect multiple All-Region awards in two individual events this spring.

Zawalich's two All-East Region awards this spring give him six for the 2013-14 season, including cross country, and push his career total to a team-high 12 (including two for cross country). Dixon is now a nine-time All-Region performer with five outdoor honors, including four for the 110-meter high hurdles, to go with four indoor awards for the 60-meter hurdles. Cooney, a two-time All-American as part of Stonehill's 4000-meter distance medley relay along with Zawalich, and Cormier have totaled seven All-Region awards over their career, while Grubel and Staley, an All-America high jumper for Stonehill, have earned six career awards and Baldasare has earned five career honors in just one season. Smith now has four All-Region awards to his credit over his career, with Moules, Perkins and Leonard earning three and Fontanella and Willgoos two.

While Wilcox is a first time track All-Region performer, he also posted an All-Region finish with the Stonehill cross country team last fall along with Leonard and Zawalich. Viotto, an NCAA provisional qualifier, and Webber both earn their first All-Region honors this spring.
