Skyhawks Sweep Saint Michael’s In Doubleheader Action

Stonehill earned a 7-5 triumph in game one and a 7-0 victory in game two

COLCHESTER, Vt. (March 24, 2012) – The Stonehill College softball team claimed a doubleheader sweep over Saint Michael's College in Northeast-10 Conference (NE-10) action on Saturday afternoon at Doc Jacobs Field. The Skyhawks posted a 7-5 victory in game one and a 7-0 shutout in game two.

Senior pitcher Samantha Krantz (Hampton Bays, N.Y./Hampton Bays) improved to 5-0 overall on the season on five-and-one-thirds innings pitched, eight hits, three runs (all earned), two walks and seven strikeouts. Freshman Julianne Meehan (Groveland, Mass./Pentucket Regional) notched her second save over one-and-two-thirds innings of work, three hits, two runs (both earned) and one punchout.

Junior Stephanie Frank (Essex, Vt./Essex) was handed the loss in a complete game effort alongside 12 hits, seven runs (one earned), no walks and three strikeouts.

Stonehill posted four runs in the top of the third inning on four hits and two fielding miscues from Saint Michael's. Sophomore designated player Lindsay McKillop (East Meadow, N.Y./East Meadow) highlighted the frame with a two-run single up the middle while Jocelynne Morrell (West Haven, Conn./West Haven) also knocked in a run with a single.

The Skyhawks made it 6-1 in the fourth as junior centerfielder Courtney Marchand (Raymond, N.H./Timberlane Regional) lifted a sacrifice fly to left field plating sophomore right fielder Angela Moskwa (West Suffield, Conn./Suffield). Stonehill added its second run of the inning courtesy of a dropped fly ball in centerfield that allowed senior shortstop Chelsea Stryker (Baldwin, N.Y./Kellenberg Memorial) to score.

Saint Michael's cut into the deficit at 6-3 in the bottom of sixth on run-producing singles from junior designated player Brittany Cantore (Saint Johnsbury, Vt./Saint Johnsbury Academy) and first baseman Lindsay Houston (Concord, N.H./Concord).

In the seventh, McKillop pushed the Skyhawks advantage to 7-3 with a solo home run to left field, her first round-tripper of the season.

The Purple Knights trimmed the gap to 7-5 in the bottom half of the seventh inning on a two-run homer by sophomore shortstop Bethany Falls (Essex Junction, Vt./Essex) but their rally fell short with the tying run at the plate.

McKillop led the offense with a 2-for-4 performance at the plate, two runs scored and three runs batted in. Marchand went 3-for-3 with one run and one RBI while Nicole Eisenmann (East Bridgewater, Mass./East Bridgewater), Casey Remick (Norton, Mass./Norton) and Moskwa all compiled two hits.

McKillop piloted the Skyhawks to their game two victory with a complete game shutout in the circle. The sophomore allowed just four hits to improve to 2-0 on the season. From the second inning to the middle of the fifth, McKillop retired eight-straight batters with only one of those outs leaving the infield. McKillop also induced three double plays.

For Saint Michael's, Laura McCormack (Natick, Mass./Natick) suffered the loss on five innings pitched, ten hits, six runs (five earned), one walk and four strikeouts.

Eisenmann extended her hitting streak to ten games in the top of the first inning with a two-run triple to centerfield for an early 2-0 lead. Eisenmann made it 3-0 later in the frame scoring on a throwing error by the shortstop.

In the second, junior right fielder Kaitlin Miller (Derry, N.H./Pinkerton Academy) launched a home run to centerfield, her first of the season, for a 4-0 advantage.

Junior catcher Kelsey Wilcox (Canterbury, Conn./Griswold) crushed her second home run of the season in the fifth inning, a two-run shot to right centerfield, to increase the score to 6-0. Marchand doubled to left centerfield to lead off the frame pushing her hitting streak to six-straight games.

McKillop drove in Marchand, who singled to begin the inning, with a sacrifice fly to centerfield to cap the scoring for the Skyhawks.

Stryker went 2-for-4 with one run scored from the leadoff spot, Marchand followed with a 2-for-3 showing and three runs scored in the two-spot and Eisenmann went 2-for-4 with one run scored and two RBI's. Remick also notched a multi-hit game going 2-for-4 at the plate.

Stonehill (11-3, 6-2 NE-10) hosts Saint Anselm College in its home opener on Wednesday, March 28 for a NE-10 doubleheader matchup beginning at 3 p.m. Saint Michael's (3-9, 1-3 NE-10) hosts Franklin Pierce tomorrow in a doubleheader tilt at noon.
