Skyhawks Drop Two Versus Panthers

Adelphi blanks Stonehill, 1-0, in game one and posts 8-7 victory in game two

GARDEN CITY, N.Y. (April 1, 2012) – The Stonehill College softball team dropped a pair of games to Adelphi University on Sunday afternoon, 1-0 and 8-7, in Northeast-10 Conference (NE-10) doubleheader action at Janet L. Ficke Field today.

Adelphi 1, Stonehill 0

Senior pitcher Devon Kelly (Baldwin, N.Y./Baldwin) hurled a complete game, three-hit shutout to push her record to 8-4 overall on the season. Kelly also walked two and struck out four in her outing.

For Stonehill, senior Samantha Krantz (Hampton Bays, N.Y./Hampton Bays) was handed the loss on six innings pitched, six hits, one run (earned), no walks and a game-high five strikeouts.

Adelphi claimed its only run in the bottom of the first inning as junior centerfielder Emily Dorko (Matamoras, Pa./Delaware Valley) scored on a sacrifice pop-up down the first base line off the bat of freshman right fielder Jaclyn Binstock (Centereach, N.Y./Centereach).

Kelly only allowed three runners to reach scoring position over the next six innings squandering Stonehill's best threat in the fourth inning with a 5-3 double play.

Dorko led the Panthers offensively at the plate with a 2-for-3 showing and one run scored. Senior first baseman Amanda Krier (Coeur d'Alene, ID / Lake City) also went 2-for-3 out of the third spot in the lineup for Adelphi.

Senior shortstop Chelsea Stryker (Baldwin, N.Y./Kellenberg Memorial), sophomore second baseman Lindsay McKillop (East Meadow, N.Y./East Meadow) and sophomore right fielder Brianna Gunter (Amherst, N.H./Souhegan) all had one hit each in the loss.

Adelphi 8, Stonehill 7

Sophomore pitcher Katie Andrews (Dothan, Ala./Dothan) earned the win in relief throwing four innings, allowing six hits, two runs (both earned), no walks and one strikeout. Junior starter Lauren Watts (Gardendale, Ala./Tuscaloosa Academy) was handed the no-decision on three innings pitched, six hits, five runs (all earned), three walks and four punchouts.

Krantz suffered the loss on two innings pitched, two hits, one run (earned), one walk and three strikeouts. Freshman starter Julianne Meehan (Groveland, Mass./Pentucket Regional) landed the no-decision on three innings, four hits, four runs (all unearned), no walks and one strikeout.

Stonehill raced out to a 3-0 lead as junior designated player Nicole Eisenmann (East Bridgewater, Mass./East Bridgewater) notched a RBI single up the middle and junior catcher Kelsey Wilcox (Canterbury, Conn./Griswold) knocked in a run with a double to centerfield for a 2-0 advantage. Stryker capped the Skyhawks run with a RBI groundout to short in the second.

Adelphi answered in the bottom half of the frame with four runs highlighted by a two-run single from Dorko up the middle and a two-run double down the right field line by Binstock.

The Skyhawks reclaimed a 5-4 lead in the top of the third inning as Gunter delivered a two-run single to left field plating McKillop and Wilcox.

Both teams exchanged one run each in the fourth inning before the Panthers scratched home two runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to tie the game up at 7-7.

Junior shortstop Jeanine Leo (Staten Island, N.Y./Tottenville) clinched the doubleheader sweep for Adelphi in the seventh inning with a two-out, walk-off homer to left centerfield.

Stryker finished the contest 2-for-4 with two runs scored and two runs batted in while Eisenmann went 2-for-4 with one RBI. Gunter produced a 2-for-4 line out of the seventh spot in the lineup with one run scored and two runs batted in.

Stonehill (13-7, 6-6 NE-10) hosts Franklin Pierce University in NE-10 doubleheader action on Tuesday, April 3 at 3 p.m. Adelphi (18-9, 9-3 NE-10) travels to Le Moyne on Tuesday for a twinbill with game one schedule for 3 p.m.
