Skyhawks defeat Minot State, 6-4, in game one and fall to Kutztown, 2-0, in game two

CLERMONT, Fla. (March 13, 2012) – The Stonehill College softball team split a doubleheader against Minot State University and Kutztown University, both non-conference games, on Tuesday afternoon at the National Training Center. The Skyhawks defeated the Beavers, 6-4, in game one and dropped a 2-0 decision to the Golden Bears in game two.
Stonehill 6, Minot State 4
Sophomore Lindsay McKillop (East Meadow, N.Y./East Meadow) earned the victory on four-and-two-thirds innings pitched, three runs (all earned), no walks and two strikeouts. Freshman Julianne Meehan (Groveland, Mass./Pentucket Regional) notched her first-career collegiate save in her first-career appearance for Stonehill pitching two-and-one-thirds innings yielding one run (earned), three hits and two strikeouts.
For Minot State, sophomore Jen Dixon (Brandon, Manitoba/Vincent Massey) was handed the loss on four plus innings, five hits, six runs (one earned), three walks and two punchouts.
Stonehill took a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning as junior Casey Remick (Norton, Mass./Norton) drew a bases loaded walk, sophomore Jocelynne Morrell (West Haven, Conn./West Haven) scored on a passed ball and junior Courtney Marchand (Raymond, N.H./Timberlane Regional) touched home plate off of a fielding miscue.
After Minot State cut the deficit to 3-2 in the top of the third, the Skyhawks increased their gap to 6-2 highlighted by junior Kelsey Wilcox's (Canterbury, Conn./Griswold) first round-tripper of the season.
Sophomore Christina Swider (Hebron, Conn./RHAM) jump started Stonehill's offense with a double and advanced to third base on a groundout prior to scoring on a fielding error that allowed McKillop to reach base to make it 4-2. Wilcox followed with a two-run shot to right centerfield giving the Skyhawks a 6-2 advantage.
Minot State trimmed the deficit to 6-4 with a run in the fifth and the seventh innings, respectively.
Senior Chelsea Stryker (Baldwin, N.Y./Kellenberg Memorial) went 2-for-4 at the plate with one run batted in while Wilcox was 2-for-3 with one home run and two RBI's. Remick finished game one going 1-for-2 with one run driven in.
Kutztown 2, Stonehill 0
Freshman Tori Marcavage (Collegeville, Pa./Perkiomen Valley) hurled a complete game two-hit shutout to guide Kutztown University (15-1 overall) to its victory over Stonehill. The first-year right-handed pitcher struck out a game-high five batters and did not issue a free pass.
For Stonehill, senior Kellie Reardon (Burlington, Mass./Arlington Catholic) was dealt the loss on five-and-two-thirds innings pitched, two runs (one earned), ten hits, one walk and four punchouts. Classmate Samantha Krantz (Hampton Bays, N.Y./Hampton Bays) recorded one out for the Skyhawks in relief.
Scoreless through the first three full innings of play, the Golden Bears grabbed a 1-0 lead as junior Brianna Knipe (Bethlehem, Pa./Liberty) scored on a passed ball from third base. Knipe led off the frame with a single, stole second base and advanced to third on a single by teammate Nicole Colineri (Scotch Plains, N.J./Scotch Plains-Fanwood).
Kutztown also added a run in the bottom of the sixth on a bases loaded fielder's choice RBI from sophomore Morgan Booth (Stroudsburg, Pa./Stroudsburg). Knipe, junior Maria Isgro (Galloway, N.J./Absegami) and Colineri also singled, all in-a-row, to set up the scoring frame.
Stonehill (3-1, 2-0 NE-10) returns to action on tomorrow at the National Training Center in Clermont, Fla. against the University of Bridgeport at 9:00 a.m. and Nyack College at 11 a.m.
