Stonehill, Assumption Split Doubleheader

WORCESTER, Mass. (April 14, 2012) – The Stonehill College softball team splits its Northeast-10 Conference (NE-10) doubleheader with Assumption College on Saturday afternoon. The Skyhawks dropped game one at Marois Field, 9-0, and bounced back in game two with a 4-2 victory.

Assumption 9, Stonehill 0

Senior pitcher Jennifer Lowrey (Assonet, Mass./Apponequet) shutout Stonehill over five innings on two hits, one walk and a game-high eight strikeouts.

Kellie Reardon (Burlington, Mass./Arlington Catholic) suffered the loss on three-and-one-thirds innings pitched, nine runs (four earned) and one punchout. Junior Nicole Eisenmann (East Bridgewater, Mass./East Bridgewater) closed out the final two-thirds of the contest allowing one hit.

After taking an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning on a RBI single by freshman catcher Andrea Crowley (Norfolk, Mass./Ursuline Academy), Assumption scored six runs in the third inning to jump out to a commanding 7-0 lead.

Senior shortstop Marissa Palumbo (Worcester, Mass./Holy Name) and freshman designated player Katherine Mosca (Middletown, Conn./Middletown) both drove in a pair of runs with singles to highlight the offense outburst in the frame.

The Greyhounds received a two-run double from freshman first baseman Ashley Impagliazzo (Glocester, R.I./LaSalle Academy) in the fourth inning to round out their scoring.

Stonehill 4, Assumption 2

Samantha Krantz (Hampton Bays, N.Y./Hampton Bays) pushed her record to 9-5 overall on the season with a complete-game effort. Krantz increased her program record strikeouts mark to 235 with six punchouts in game two while also giving up four hits, two runs (both earned) and three walks.

Lowrey was handed the loss in relief as she pitched two innings, allowed two hits, two runs (all earned), no walks and three strikeouts. Assumption senior starter Chelsea Durso (Salem, N.H./Salem) landed the no-decision on five innings, ten hits, two runs (both earned), one walk and four strikeouts.

Sophomore first baseman Lindsay McKillop (East Meadow, N.Y./East Meadow) provided the Skyhawks all of their runs with one swing in the top of the sixth inning as she belted a grand slam to left field, her third homer of the season.

Junior Casey Remick (Norton, Mass./Norton) jump started the rally with a leadoff single to left centerfield and senior shortstop Chelsea Stryker (Baldwin, N.Y./Kellenberg Memorial) and junior Courtney Marchand (Raymond, N.H./Timberlane Regional) both followed with infield singles to set up the scoring rally for Stonehill.

Krantz avoided a second and third situation with one out in the bottom of the sixth inning by inducing two groundouts to keep the score at 4-2. In the seventh, Krantz set down Assumption in order 1-2-3.

Stryker went 2-for-4 with one run scored, Marchand posted a 2-for-3 line with one run and McKillop paced the offense going 1-for-4 with a grand slam.

Stonehill (18-12, 11-11 NE-10) travels to American International College tomorrow for a NE-10 twinbill with game one scheduled for noon. Assumption (23-12. 16-6 NE-10) hosts Bentley University tomorrow for a conference doubleheader beginning at noon.
