van Biezen brothers lead Penmen to third-straight win

EASTON, Mass. (April 10, 2021) – Southern New Hampshire University, ranked No. 3 in the Oracle/Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Division II East Regional rankings, posted its third-straight win with a 7-0 decision over Stonehill College, ranked No. 10 in the East Region, in Northeast-10 Conference men's tennis action at Charles Watt Tennis Courts this afternoon. 

Highlights

  • Southern New Hampshire postgrads Bas and Willem van Biezen led six double-winners for the Penmen on the afternoon. The brothers, ranked No. 3 in the Oracle/ITA Division II East Region doubles rankings, combined for a win at No. 1 doubles and then Bas added a victory at No. 1 singles and Willem at No. 2.
  • Senior Guido Janssen, junior Fernando Torres, sophomore Zachary Duboulay and freshman Sam Goddard rounded out the Penmen with two wins on the afternoon.
  • Sophomore Luke Nickerson, despite dropping his two matches, was a part of two tough matches at No. 2 doubles, along with senior Russell White, and then forced a tiebreaker in the first set of his match at No. 4 singles against Goddard, before falling.

How it Happened

  • The van Biezen brothers clinched the doubles point for Southern N.H. with their 6-0 triumph at No. 1 after Goddard and Duboulay registered a 6-0 victory at No. 3. Janssen and Torres finished a sweep of the doubles matches, edging White and Nickerson, 6-4.
  • Torres posted SNHU's first singles point with his 6-1, 6-1 win against Stonehill sophomore Ben Simmons at No. 5
  • Duboulay followed with a 6-2, 6-0 win at No. 6 singles against Stonehill senior Joey Conrod.
  • Bas van Biezen, ranked No. 2 in the Oracle/ITA Division II East Region singles rankings, then provided the match-clinching point for SNHU at No. 1 singles, with a 6-0, 6-2 win against Stonehill sophomore Christian Duffy.
  • Nickerson fell in the match of the afternoon at No. 4 singles against Goddard. The duo went to a tiebreaker in the first set, before Goddard pulled out an 8-6 split. Goddard followed by taking the second set, 6-2.

Noteworthy

  • Today marked the last of five-straight matches against regionally-ranked teams to open the season for Stonehill.
  • Willem van Biezen is ranked No. 1 in the Oracle/ITA East Region singles rankings.

Up Next

Stonehill (0-5, 0-5 NE10) is scheduled to return to action on Tuesday, when it visits Saint Michael's College for an NE10 match at 3 p.m. Fans from off campus will not be permitted to attend the match in conjunction with the current NE10 spectator policy. The Skyhawks next home match is slated for Tuesday, April 20, against Adelphi University, ranked No. 9 in the East Region, at 3 p.m.

Southern N.H. (4-1, 4-1 NE10) is scheduled to host Bentley University, ranked eighth in the region, next Saturday at 1 p.m.
