Sole leads three double-winners for Panthers in matchup of regionally-ranked teams

OCEANSIDE, N.Y. (April 3, 2021) – Adelphi University, ranked No. 9 in the most recent Oracle/Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Division II East Region rankings, posted a 6-1 victory over Stonehill College, ranked No. 10 in the region, in Northeast-10 Conference men's tennis action inside the Point Set Racquet Club this afternoon. 

Highlights

  • Junior Pietro Sole led three double-winners for Adelphi with wins at No. 2 singles and doubles. His doubles partner, sophomore Salomon Arce Lema was also a double-winner for the Panthers, along with senior Luke Attride-Stirling.
  • Sophomore Christian Duffy was a double-winner for Stonehill with victories at No. 1 singles and doubles.

How it Happened

  • Duffy and senior Aleksander Lazowski collected the first win of the day for Stonehill, posting a 6-3 victory at No. 1 doubles.
  • Adelphi rallied to clinch the doubles point, with Attride-Stirling and sophomore Andrew Ray clinching with their 6-2 win at No. 3, after Sole and Arce Lema posted a 6-3 decision at No. 2.
  • Sole posted Adelphi's first singles win with his 6-2, 6-1 victory at No. 2 against Stonehill sophomore Luke Nickerson.
  • Attride-Stirling pulled the Panthers within a point of the win with his 6-3, 6-0 win at No. 3 singles over Lazowski.
  • Sophomore Valentin Le Goupil-Maier provided the match-clinching point for Adelphi with his 6-2, 6-3 victory at No. 4 singles over Stonehill senior Joey Conrod.
  • Duffy added a win at No. 1 singles for Stonehill to claim his second victory of the match, topping senior Gabriel Balestero , 6-3, 6-4.

Noteworthy

  • Duffy was making his first appearance for Stonehill this spring, improving to 9-6 in his career in doubles play. He also notched his second career win at No. 1 singles.
  • Lazowski, Duffy's doubles partner, improved to 15-11 over his career in doubles play, picking up his fifth career NE10 doubles win.
  • Today marked the second of what could be five-straight matches against regionally-ranked teams to open the season for Stonehill after playing No. 8 Bentley University on Tuesday.

Stonehill (0-2, 0-2 NE10) is slated to host Franklin Pierce University, ranked seventh in the region, for an NE10 match on Tuesday at 3 p.m. Fans from off campus will not be permitted to attend the match in conjunction with the current Stonehill and NE10 spectator policy. Adelphi (2-2, 2-2 NE10) visits Le Moyne College on Tuesday.
