Horwitz clinches match win for Falcons at No. 4 singles

EASTON, Mass. (March 30, 2021) – Bentley University, ranked No. 8 in the most recent Oracle/Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Division II East Regional rankings, posted a 7-0 victory over Stonehill College, ranked No. 10 in the region, in Northeast-10 Conference men's tennis action at Charles Watt Tennis Courts this afternoon. 

Highlights

  • Bentley got contributions throughout its lineup in posting its first win of the season.
  • Senior Connor Aulson and freshman Max Bonte each won their lone matches on the court with decisions at No. 1 and No. 2 singles respectively.
  • Bentley's No. 1 doubles pairing of seniors Daniel Weitz and Mauricio Fadul Rubod clinched the doubles point for the Falcons with their victory.
  • Stonehill's doubles pairing of senior Joey Conrod and freshman Liam Bevens turned in a gutsy win for the Skyhawks at No. 2 doubles, outlasting the Bentley tandem of sophomore Jordan Soifer and freshman Gabe Horwitz in a tiebreak, 7-6 (7-3).

How it Happened

  • Weitz and Fadul Rubod clinched the doubles point for Bentley with their 6-1 win at No. 1 doubles after picking up No. 3 doubles by default.
  • Horwitz clinched the match for Bentley with his 6-3, 6-2 win at No. 4 singles against Bevens.

Noteworthy

  • Today's match marked the season-opener for Stonehill, with head coach Peter Miller opening his 41st season at the helm. He has posted a career record of 359-273 (.568) in dual matches over his Stonehill coaching career.
  • Conrod improved to 4-1 over his Stonehill career in NE10 doubles matches, sporting a 19-15 doubles record overall in his four-year career.
  • Bevens made his collegiate debut for Stonehill at No. 2 doubles and No. 4 singles.
  • Sophomore Luke Nickerson made his Stonehill debut at No. 1 singles and doubles after transferring from Johnson & Wales University in Rhode Island.

Stonehill (0-1, 0-1 NE10) is next slated to return to action on Saturday at Adelphi University, ranked ninth in the region, for an NE10 match at 2 p.m. Spectators will not be permitted to attend by the NE10 COVID-19 attendance policies. The Skyhawks next home match is slated for next Tuesday, April 6, when they host Franklin Pierce University, ranked seventh in the region, at Watt Courts at 3 p.m. Thursday's match against Le Moyne College has been postponed to next Thursday, April 8, at 2 p.m.

Bentley (1-1, 1-1 NE10) visits Le Moyne College, ranked fifth in the region, on Saturday at noon.
