Stonehill Tops Franklin Pierce in NE-10 Opener, 9-0


Freshman Thomas Bellio earned wins at No. 1 singles and doubles tonight for the Skyhawks.

Bellio continues impressive collegiate start as double winner 

EASTON, Mass. (September 30, 2014) – Stonehill College opened its dual match and conference schedule with a 9-0 triumph over Franklin Pierce University in Northeast-10 Conference men's tennis action at the Sally Blair Ames Sports Complex this evening.

Freshmen Thomas Bellio (Saint Joseph, Michigan/Saint Joseph) and Nikolay Lisichenok (Danvers, Massachusetts/Danvers) continued the impressive starts to their collegiate careers as double-winners for Stonehill tonight. The duo, fresh off their B-Doubles draw win at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) East Regional over the weekend, led off with an 8-2 win at No. 1 doubles. Bellio followed by rallying from a set down for a 4-6, 6-0, 10-5 victory at No. 1 singles against Franklin Pierce senior Christopher Brewer (Brattleboro, Vermont/Brattleboro Union). Lisichenok recorded a 6-3, 6-1 victory at No. 3 singles against senior Mark Petrie (Pembroke, Massachusetts/Pembroke).

Senior Jared Drzal (West Sayville, New York/Sayville), junior Gerard Tierney (Marshfield, Massachusetts/Marshfield) and freshman Jeffrey Gagnon (Providence, Rhode Island/The Wheeler School) rounded out Stonehill's double-winners on the night. Drzal and freshman Tom Buckley (Hebron, Connecticut/RHAM) combined to record an 8-4 win at No. 2 doubles before Drzal added a 6-3, 6-2 win at No. 4 singles against freshman Olivier Viel (Quebec City, Quebec/Seminaire St. Francois).

Gagnon and Tierney teamed up for an 8-0 sweep at No. 3 doubles and then Gagnon added a 6-0, 6-1 win at No. 5 singles against senior Aras Banevicius (Canton, Connecticut/Canton). Tierney claimed an 8-1 pro-set win at No. 6 singles against freshman Logan Sherwood (Merrimac, Massachusetts/Pentucket Regional). Junior Philip Klados (Lake Forest, California/Santa Margarita Catholic) added a point for the Skyhawks with his back and forth 6-1, 5-7, 11-9 win at No. 2 singles against junior Drew Bennett (Rindge, New Hampshire/Conant).

Stonehill (1-0, 1-0 NE-10) is back in action on Thursday when it hosts Saint Anselm College for an NE-10 matchup at Charles Watt Tennis Courts at 3:30 p.m. Franklin Pierce (0-4, 0-3 NE-10) visits Southern New Hampshire University tomorrow at 3 p.m.
