Freshmen lead strong weekend for Skyhawks at East Regional
FLUSHING, N.Y. (September 29, 2014) – Freshmen Thomas Bellio (Saint Joseph, Michigan/Saint Joseph) and Nikolay Lisichenok (Danvers, Massachusetts/Danvers) led the way for Stonehill College at the United States Tennis Association (USTA)/Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) NCAA Division II East Regional Championships, hosted by Queens (N.Y.) College and Daemen College, at the Billie Jean King National Tennis Center this weekend.
The Stonehill freshman duo won the B-Doubles draw with an 8-6 decision over the Post University tandem of Alejandro Perez and Peter Fanous. Bellio also advanced to the semifinal round of the B-singles draw before being defeated 8-3 by Post's Martin Munez. Lisichenok also reached the B-singles quarterfinals, along with senior Jared Drzal (West Sayville, New York/Sayville), who was defeated by Bellio 7-5. Drzal and classmate Jonathan Sanders (Holbrook, New York/Saint Anthony's) teamed up to reach the B-Doubles quarters, while seniors Tom Alaimo (North Andover, Massachusetts/Central Catholic) and Eric Ringstad (Fairbanks, Alaska/Monroe Catholic) combined to reach the second round of the A-Doubles draw, while also competing in the A-Singles bracket.
Bellio and Lisichenok dropped just one game on their way to the B-Doubles final today, that coming in their 6-1 semifinal round win over Justin Vijungco and Ryan Villarruel from Adelphi in the semifinals. The Stonehill duo breezed to identical 6-0 decisions in the second and third rounds after receiving a first round bye.
Bellio reached the B-semifinals by claiming a 7-5 victory over Drzal in a battle of Stonehill teammates in the quarterfinals. Drzal had defeated freshman Jeffrey Gagnon (Providence, Rhode Island/The Wheeler School) 7-5 in the third round in another all-Skyhawks clash. Alaimo and Ringstad opened the regionals with an 8-6 victory in the opening round of the A-Doubles bracket against Ander Murillo and Diego Pinto from the University of District of Columbia. They were then handed an 8-0 setback by third-seeded Rafael Ferriera and Manuel Righi from Concordia (N.Y.) College.
