Greyhounds answer late Skyhawks equalizer with 89th minute winner

WORCESTER, Mass. (September 18, 2021) – Freshman Jesus Guarcas saved the blushes for Assumption College with an 89th minute winner less than a minute after Stonehill College had leveled and looked to force overtime to secure a 3-2 victory in a Northeast-10 Conference men's soccer matchup that was delayed nearly two hours at halftime for lightening in the area of Brian Kelly Stadium tonight.

How it Happened

  • Guarcas' winner came just 35-seconds after Stonehill freshman Iago Luiz De Sousa-Vieira appeared to have forced extra time with his team-leading sixth goal of the season with 2:32 remaining in regulation.
  • Stonehill had taken an early lead when sophomore Jacob Woznicki scored for the second-straight match 15:51 into the match off a pass from classmate Zach Davis.
  • Assumption followed with the quick equalizer less than a minute later as senior Kevin Hernandez scored his first of two goals in the opening half that sent the Greyhounds into what would be a lengthy intermission in the 17th minute.

    Hernandez completed his first half brace with 3:19 left in the opening half, assisted by junior Jamison Magowan.
  • The teams endured a nearly two-hour delay during halftime when a thunderstorm rolled through.
  • Junior Andrew Hammersley made nine of his career-high 12 saves in the second half to give Stonehill the chance to level and De Sousa-Vieira did just that with 2:32 left in regulation.
  • Freshman Francisco Teixeira registered six saves in the Assumption goal.

Noteworthy

  • De Sousa-Vieira has scored six of Stonehill's 11 goals through six matches this season and ranks second among NE10 leaders in goals and points.
  • Hammersley has logged six saves of more in four of his five appearances this season and 15 times overall in 20 matches played after posting double-figure saves for the third time in his career.
  • Hammersley leads the NE10 with his 37 saves in five games this season, while ranking third in save percentage (.804).
  • Ten of Stonehill's 11 goals this season have been scored by players playing their first collegiate season, led by six from true freshman De Sousa-Vieira, a two each from sophomores Woznicki and Davis.
  • All six of Stonehill's matches this season have been decided by one goal.
