White named Player of the Week for the first time in his career

EASTON, Mass. (January 27, 2014) – Stonehill College junior goaltender Chris Tasiopoulos (Norwell, Mass./Thayer Acadmey) and sophomore forward Garrett White (Wakefield, Mass./Pomfret School) have both earned weekly ice hockey honors from the Northeast-10 Conference for their efforts in Stonehill's 3-0 week.

One week after collecting his third NE-10 Goaltender of the Week award of the 2013-14 season, Tasiopoulos has been recognized again by the conference after leading Stonehill to three wins last week, including a 3-0 shutout at Assumption College. With the shutout, Tasiopoulos added to his own school record of clean sheets in a season, as he now has four in 2013-14 and five in his career.

The junior opened up the week by stopping 36 of the 39 shots that came his way at Saint Michael's College, including all ten in the third period to preserve the win for Stonehill. He followed that up with the shutout of Assumption, a 29-save performance. In his third start of the week, Tasiopoulos helped Stonehill improve to 6-0 in conference play by stopping 20 of 22 shots against Southern New Hampshire University. Overall this week, the 2011-12 NE-10 Rookie of the Year made 85 saves in 90 opportunities and improved his record to 8-5-0.

This season, Tasiopoulos ranks second in the Northeast-10 in goals against average (2.46), save percentage (.925), and winning percentage (.615). In four conference games, he has posted a 1.25 goals against average and .955 save percentage with two shutouts. With four weekly awards this season, Tasiopoulos now has more than any other goaltender in the conference.

White, a sophomore transfer from the University of Southern Maine, made his Stonehill debut on January 15th against Becker College, a game that the Skyhawks won 2-0 with the help of White's first goal in a Stonehill uniform. This week, he continued to make an impact, recording four points on two goals and two assists, with two multi-point games.

White tallied Stonehill's first goal of the game against Saint Michael's College, and he also assisted on senior captain Bryan Rooney's (Canton, Mass./New Hampton School) late score in the 5-3 victory. In Stonehill's next contest, a 3-0 win at Assumption College, White assisted on the first goal of the game, and then found the back of the net with a power play score midway through the second period. The Skyhawks are now 4-0 since White has joined the lineup, and the sophomore forward has recorded five points in that same span.

White becomes the third Stonehill student-athlete to win the NE-10 Player of the Week award this season, as Rooney has been recognized twice (November 6 and December 16), and sophomore forward Robbie Dorgan (Ossining, N.Y./Boston Bulldogs) once (December 2).

Stonehill (10-9-0, 6-0-0 NE-10) will be back in action tomorrow night at the Foxboro Sports Center, as the Skyhawks are set to host UMass Dartmouth at 7 p.m. in Stonehill's final non-conference contest of the season. Stonehill will be looking to extend its winning streak to five games, which would match the longest streak since the 2009-10 campaign.
